first of all I don't think that a pet store should have to refund you for a fish that you killed due to something that they had no control over... If the told you something wrong and that killed it most definitely a refund is in order... if you bought a car from a dealership and wrecked it the next day would you expect a refund NO!
The thing is I DIDNT kill them they were just fish that couldnt make it. Only the strong survive, yeah I think thats how that goes, but as for the fish I have 2 thriving beautiful fish out of the original 8. My wrong doing I think not, but ya never know.

You could stop shopping at petco... I have never really been terribly thrilled with them. they think that goldfish like their water to be cold so they keep it at about 45-55 F all the time and wonder why the fish all lay on the bottom struggling to breath...

An aquarium shop should have it's gaurantee posted or offered in writing and be very clear about what it covers and what it doesn't. THis helps with these type of situations.

My policy is 7 days on the fish I sell but I make it very clear what I cover and don't. I guarentee the health of the fish only. If a person does something wrong or if thier aquarium has some type of enviromental problem and the new fish dies, that's not my fault and I nor any shop should be held finacialy respocsible for it.

If a fish jumps out and dies, who's fault is it? Not the guy who sold the fish. If the water quality is all screwd up and the new fish dies, who's fault is it? Not the store who sold the fish. Same with the new fish got beat up and was killed by the other tank mates, that's typically not the aquarium shops fault.

I realise that there are tons of what it's or variables here but for the most part, the inexperianced aquariust should not expect the store they bought a fish from to pay for thier aquarium learning experiance, that's not even reasonable to expect.

Back to the origanal post - A convict should live just fine in a ph of low 7's, it sounds as if your dealing with a person who is not very knowledgable and perhaps you should find a better shop to spend your money at. If this guy is that ignorant and he works there, how healthy do you think the aquariums are in that shop. FInd a small independent who specialises in fish, they will often times be a better place to shop with better knowledge.

Hope I'm not pissing anyone off but these chains stores are what has ruined the hobby for many people. They typically don't hire good, knowledgable people, they won't pay enought to keep the good people they have, the knowladgeable people who work in these places have thier hands tied most the time and can't order cool stuff or give out real good advise because it harms sales. It's just big industry B.S. with the only importance being the bottom line. Give some one your hard earned money that knows thier stuff and can take good care of you....

Oh and another thing, how the heck do you kill a convict. THey are indestructable!!! Did you have another fish kill it or something?

I'm of the same opinion as O. You will always have better luck buying from a reputable LFS. Stay away from the chains. How long will a LFS keep its customers it they do not educate that customer and allow them to kill fish due to poor tank maintenance or fish compatibility. A customer will only replace fish so many times before he switches stores. Is it not in the stores best interest to build trust in a customer by giving the healthiest tank?

And fishyboi why would you expect a refund for your blue lobster? You let it get out of its environment not Petco.

The few times Ive actually brought a dead fish back Ive usually planned ahead an gotten my water perfect, then went back with it an the fish an have never had any Petco, Petsmart refuse my refund for another fishie.

Amen brother. No incentive in working in these places. Trust me. I'm really the only person who's halfway knowledgeable with fish, and they stick me at the cash register so that they can leave somebody at the fish section, who confessed to me that their only job is to "net the fish" because they don't know anything about them. :screwy:

Thats sad but true. I shop at the petsmart because i have to, not because i want to. My best advise for anyone is go to a place that specialises in fish. They might not always know what they are talking about either, but you are more likely to find at least one employee that really knows their stuff.

OK. Let me paint a scenario. Convicts costs about $3.99 or less at any pet store, I hope. OK, here is my painting. A local fish store sold a customer a red tail gold asian arowana. Cost him $1500.00 for an 8 inch fish. Illegal or not, this fish died the next day. I did not see the condition of this fish. As a fish store owner, what should be done? As a customer, what would you expect?

I don't carry or sell $1,500.00 fish but I do sell $100.00 to $300.00 dollar fish. On most of the fish I sell, especially the more expensive ones, I don't offer them for sale untill I have had them two weeks or so and they are eating real well and have not had any signs of parasites or other illness. At that point I can sell the fish with the confidense that it is in good condition and most likley won't introduce a parasite or disease into my customers aquarium. I know most of my customers pretty well and know what they have and thier experience level so I think I have a pretty good feel for what fish they should or should not buy. People who I do not know that come in and want to buy an expensive fish, I start asking questions to try to determine if they have the experience and set up to house the fish. If I don't feel good about it I say so and suggest other fish. If a person wants to but it anyway against my advise, I'll give in sometimes but I tell them up front that I will offer no gaurantee on the fish. Sometime even though I think everything has been done right, a fish goes home with someone and dies for some reason. If after seeing the dead fish and it's body is not all beat or tore up and testing the water and it is appropriate for the fish, I will honor my gaurantee. Likewise, if the fish is all beat up or the water is bad, I don't gaurantee the fish. THis information is offered up front to the customer before the purchase, they know what they are getting into and the policy. It doesn't matter what the cost of the fish is. If the customer did something wrong and killed the fish, it's thier fault and problem. If it was a fish with health problems, that's my problem and I take care of it. Now I am a compasionate person, if a guy spends big money on something and looses it and it was thier fault, I help determine the problem, help with a solution and make then a really good deal on a replacement but I will not eat the cost of a lost fish when it was someone elces fault.

Also, it has been mentioned here about bringing in a "bogus" water sample when dealing with a fish gaurantee issue. Us experianced guys can tell the differance between a ligitment aquarium water sample and tap or distilled water as it was suggested. I've kicked people out of my shp and banned them from comming back for that kind of BS. I don't need that kind of customer, go to a chain store....

A couple little things that come to mind while reading the responses/ I couldnt care less if I got the refund or not. I already threw away one convict the day before cause I thought he was gonna be the only one to die and two more died after I brought the other two in. Then on top of that I had a coupon and they were miss marked at $1.49 So I came away in the end with two healthy fish for $6.00.
Another thing, I have no problems with my water, it was the guys perception of the correct parameters that almost prevented my refund.
