Poorman's Monster Fish Tank

Big Box is my only option. PetSmart..
With all the time and effort you’re investing and you’re going to get one from PetSmart? I’d place an order for a WC Astronotus crassipinnis.

I see nothing wrong with getting an Oscar from Petsmart. In fact, I think it is refreshing to give one from there a chance at having good care (aside from the tank size, no offense). I'd imagine most O's from big box stores go to folks who may not even have cycled 10g tanks....much less folks who are actualy posting on an enthusiast forum like this.

I have a full-grown O, and man....there is nothing like em for wet pets! Good luck

Looking forward to seeing photos once you’ve brought Stump home!

I’ve just finished getting my Flowerhorn Cichlid settled in the first solo tank I’ve had, but after seeing all the love & accompanying pictures of Oscars in this thread, I am now considering adding another tank to my office with just an Oscar after seeing the very aptly named Brick & Big Boy….

Oscar's are one of the best fish for solo keeping. They have tons of character, can be moody and very emotional
Case in point she layed like this on the bottom of her tank for hours because I moved her rocks around...20180730_002414.jpg
This is on her one year birthday. I got her a giant mother Amazon Sword plant. She was terrified of it and would not swim past it to the other side for a week or more.20180606_173539.jpg
When she overcome her fear she went on a destruction rampage and started ripping the leaves of till just three were left.

I cannot get over how expressive that first picture is, she may as well be saying aloud how upset she is…great pictures!

Lesson learned, I won’t move around Sheriff’s rocks without giving proper notice!

Stump Update

I bought him Friday morning from the BOX, they got the fish in and out late Thursday. Stump has some odd colors (White Spots in a small area), and he seemed curious, so I chose it.
I’ve been keeping a close eye on the little fella. At first, he spent most of his time hiding in the plants or tucked up in the top corner. But now he’s really starting to explore the whole tank, but hides most of the time. He’s been cruising along the bottom, poking around with his mouth. I had noticed quite a bit of food that had settled down because it refused to eat for a couple of days, and now it’s all gone. The sand even has little lines and patterns where he’s been nosing through it.

Stump seems to be settling in well. I was a little worried about how he’d react to the white sand and the lights switching on suddenly, but when the light clicks on while he’s exploring the bottom, he doesn’t even flinch—he just keeps right on doing his thing exploring the bottom.

I’m not feeding him by hand yet, but I will eventually. I guess I need to finally capture a picture of the little guy soon!
Eventually, Stump will say hello to y'all.

Here is STUMP!

I watched STUMP closely when the lights switched on. He was exploring the sand at the time, and when the light came on, it didn’t phase him at all. He just kept right on exploring the bottom. I guess the brightness is subdued enough and the white sand isn’t an issue.

Do you see the white in his pattern? That shows up when he’s digging around in the sand floor—it darkens again when he goes up to the top. I’ve started feeding him sinking pellets and counting them out carefully. We’re falling into a little pattern, but we’re not “friends” yet.

I do sing to him, though. He just looks at me from the back like he’s still figuring me out. We’re getting to know each other—he’s just a baby still…

Stump looks great! It’ll be cool to observe his pattern as he/she grows!
Any interaction with the playground toys as yet?
