once again rally, im very sorry about the ordeal ur black had to go thru.
but i can never understand why u fed ur aro the tail of the shrimp w/o moving the spine :( i know u knew better.

Have always had concerns about sharp food and seems i was proven right... deffenately cause for concern...

that is true about the shrimps head and tail can do damages. I've lost many aros to this. so now i only feed pellets or if shrimp dried or fresh, i always remove the head and tail and if fresh i remove all of its shell.

Sorry Levi, But here's food for thought. I lost that baby Silver last year he was about 2-3" and I fed him live crickets after he was onto pellets. BAM dead fish, fits the death to the mark mins the cloudy eyes. I held him all night in the water in front of an airstone, just to prolong the suffering I guess now. Darm it. All along I suspected the crickets were too much once I held that little fish in my hands. Great idea to make this a sticky. Sorry for everyone who has lost a pet for simply not knowing better.

Im sorry to hear that, it looks like a great black.

i understand that a swimming bladder can be ruptured by frozen shrimp or prawns can freeze dried krill do this also ? and what be a good subsitute i have 2 silvers about a foot long and would like to avoid any damage to my fish!

I always take the shell and tail off market shrimp.
I recently bought some freeze dried shrimp that were so sharp I threw them away. Even the Frozen Hikari Bio Pure Krill have a sharp carapace around their head. I pick this off before feeding to any off my fish.

yikes!

makes me think twice about feeding my asian freeze dried shrimp....

freeze dried shrimp can be SHARP! poke my fingers all the time and it hurts.....

makes sense - makes me wanna de-head the shrimp before feeding......
Ever since my flowerhorns got problems in their mouth becuase of probably getting poke by this FDS I always make sure I smashed the heads of this FDS before feeding to make sure there's no pointy things like what happend to u it also pokes my fingers and hurt too imagine it happening inside their mouth or stomach....this thread ie very helpfull Thank's.

will ghost shrimp be a problem? our black/gold aro loves these.

Well I think i found your killer, sounds like Ammonia poisoning, not sure if it was mentioned already but with the symptoms sounds just like it.

Melafix is known to kill your biological filter which converts Ammonia>Nitrite>Nitrate(which is harmless under 40ppm), Once you used it you killed it off and ammonia sky rocketed, gasping was because Ammonia burns the gills when a fish inhales so it tries to get some oxygen through its mouth.

I could be wrong though not sure if you treated it with Melafix in a quarantine or the main tank.
