I just lost my silver arowana a few days back. I still do not know why he died as it was all of a sudden and with no symptoms that were known to me. He was my first and maybe some of you experienced folks could point out any mistake that i might have missed. My tank is a 6 by 2 by 2 feet. I bought the 8 '' arowana 8 months back he had grown to over 15'' when he died. The landscape is pretty ordinary with amazon, two lilly plants. Tank mates were Two 6'' cichlids (Oscars), Two 3'' Green terrors, Two 3'' Jewel cichlids, 2 big striped blue sharks, Two albino sharks (around 5-6''), One 9'' Pleco, 2 4'' Plecos, 2 Albino Cat fishes, 2 Piranhas (3-4''). I used to feed him Chicken liver, Pellets, Market peeled and deveined frozen shrimp defrosted. Feed was twice a day with once using meat/prawn and the other pellet feed. He ws doing good. Temp was maintained between 25 -27deg C with a heater, A cannister filter with sponge, glasswool, ceramic and bio ball layers, 10-25% water changes weekly.
He was active and used to eat around 5-7 1-2''peices of chicken liver or 8 -10 medium shrimps in one meal. The trouble started in january when he started eating alternate days. this continued for a few days. I presumed this to be normal because he was growing and i remember reading on websites that at this length of 12-15'' it was sufficient to feed arowanas once in 2 - 3 days. after about two weeks he stopped eating and used to move towards the bottom of the tank. He had never done this before. There were no visible symptoms of gasping or any other problems. He still used to move around but only at the bottom of the tank. I did a 30 % water change and used methyl blue just in case he had any infections. Next day he was back on top and also ate 3 peices of chicken liver. From then on he again stopped eating but continued to be swimming actively on the surface. I tried changin the feed from chicken liver to prawns he would not eat that too. This continued for about a week. Last saturday he was still swimming at about 12 in the night. On sunday morning he was no more.
