Possible cool tank...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would want to see it in person first. Sometimes peoples descriptions can be a little inaccurate. It looks like the acrylic cylinder is part of the base and the whole thing is about 35" tall, including the legs. If thats the case the actual acrylic viewing area is probably only around 10" or so tall.

It could still have its uses, I just wouldn't have my heart set on a usable clear 35x45 acrylic cylinder. It would make an awesome outdoor pond or even turtle tank. Maybe with a little work give the existing stand a faux stone finish.

The acrylic cylinder sits down inside the base a ways. It's just siliconed into the base (the current owner said he's removed it several times, and always just resilicones it in). It won't fit through a normal door unless you take it apart. He said the cylinder itself measures 45x35, and the stand adds another 10-12" of height.

I've got a bunch of idea's of my own, and I'm gonna throw some around with my dad this weekend, assuming that I get the tank. He's a carpenter by hobby (and a damn good one), and he helped me build my second 125g tank stand (in addition to helping me rebuild 300 square feet of my house).

I'll probably use plywood circles for the top and bottom, frame around the edges with 2x4's, plus a couple of internal supports, and then wrap some thin 1/8" or so ply around the outside. With at least 1 door for access, of course.

I'm not sure what I'd do for a canopy yet. I like the idea of a coffee/dining/bar table, but I'm not sure about covering it in acrylic or glass cut to fit. I'm already planning to get a cut piece of acrylic to do the bottom, and I don't know if I'll want to double that cost.

Get it. You could always just seal a piece of plywood for the top. Fiberglass and resin isn't all that expensive.

anything out of the ordinary is always a good idea as long as it isn't ugly. this is with its present stand but the concept of what you have in mind will look great. one thing to think of. if you want it as a coffee table where are you gonna put the filter. if this is 35" tall its gonna be hard to see past it when sitting on the couch. add a foot or 2 to give you room for a filter and now your at 4-5 feet way to tall for a coffee table. this is a showpiece tank but I believe it would fit best in a large home with alot of room to get around it or in a short time it will turn into an annoyance. if you have the room do it. and post up picks of the progress start to finish. good luck

This thread just gave me a great idea for my next tank build!!!! Keep the ideas flowing guys. I hope you got this thing, and that you make it awesome!

I talked to the guy on the phone today, and he's holding it for me to go get it this weekend :headbang2 He may even meet me half way, which is awesome, even though its not even an hour drive away.

I priced some 1/2" acrylic sheet today as well. I got a quote of $220 for a cut-to-fit 45" diameter circle. Not too bad, in my opinion. A 48"x48"x1/2" sheet costs $160. So for $60 I don't have to worry about cutting it... And I'll make sure to get the exact dimensions after I have the tank in hand. Wouldn't want to get the wrong size...

I still haven't told my gf about it yet tho... hope she doesn't hurt me :grinno:

It wouldn't work as a table tank in my house, anyways. This is probably going to be sitting in the shed for a few months (at the least). I suppose, if I wanted to set it up sooner, I could always sell one of my 125g tank setups.... Then I'd have the space and money to do it. Not too mention a pretty unique tank.

Edit: Oh yah, while I was pricing the acrylic, one guy asked me what I was using it for. When I told him I was getting an acrylic cylinder for a tank, he said that must have been expensive as hell. I told him I was getting it for $100 off craigslist. He couldn't believe it. :)

I'm thinking more of positioning it between/slightly behind a pair of chairs, or something like that. If I do this, I'll build a sump underneath the stand, or a "sump" style drip filter built above it, taking space in the hood. That way I can position the tank at the best level for viewing, without having to worry about cramming a sump underneath it. Not sure yet. Once I actually have the tank, I can start picturing what I want to do as far as stand and filtration.

I would love that thing! i would hang a basking lamp in the middle and build an island in the middle with plants and rocks, keep some stinkpot turtles. go for it :)

looks like an outdoor tank from seaworld...... great potential though. its kinda too bad the tank doesn't offer much head on visual.... more of an overhead view tank
