Possible Lame Question

I'd go with a powerhead+sponge combo personally, if you have the space you can put pond sponges in it (6" diameter, bout 5" tall), and they stack so you could have a 6" diameter 10" tall sponge with as large of a powerhead as you like.
Massive filtration there, more flow then most canisters if you use a large powerhead.
I like the eaze of cleaning with sponges too, stick 'em in a bucket of water and squeeze :D

(I use sponges on all but two of my tanks, mine are air driven by an under-house air system :D)

Yes, but remember he doesn't want to get his hands wet... (No, I'm not being sarcastic)

I must have missed that part, whoops.

That limits things a bit!

Could get sneaky and put a largish powerhead in the tank feeding into a hose leading out of the tank to a canister filter.
That would allow the canister filter to be placed above the tank level without it having to pull the water up.
The powerhead in the tank would force the water up to the canister filter instead.
You'd have to use a powerhead rated for the flow of the canister filter of course, and it'd have to be the powerheads flow at the number of feet of head that the canister is at.
Still if the canister is 3-4 feet off the ground that shouldn't be a problem with a decent mag-drive pump or something along those lines.

I run a fluval 104 right next to my 40 gal tank and it pumps fast enough to pull a vacuum in the canister, it occasionally sucks small amounts of air through the gaskets (once an hour on average) the air does not seem to effect the canister adversely.
