I have a 4 inch black convict who for the last 3 weeks has hid behind the filter,so I decided to try and get him za mate,now I know my tank is kinda small 20 gal but since I put her in he has done nothing but harass her and chase her he has eaten for the 1st time in 3 weeks my question is will this stop or is she doomed?The guys at the lfs sayed this might happen for a little while but it has been going on all day,what do you guys think?

We're they a bonded pair ? If the male is ready to spawn and the female isn't he will unleash hell on her. I personally would make sure female has places to retreat too especially in a 20 gallon.
they were in the same tank at the lfs right now she is hiding behind the filter and he is out and about acting normal again
Even though they were in the same aquarium is not the same as a being bonded. I would personally either divide her from the male or place objects in the aquarium for her to escape when things get rough or she may be killed by the male.
I agree with all of Mr Lindsey's advice.However,I believe you will always have problems as the tank is not really big enough for any c/a cichlids.
Take a terra-cotta or ceramic flowerpot and punch a hole with a hammer or chisel that is just big enough for the female to slip into, but is too small for the male. this will allow her to escape him when she is getting beaten. If he relentlessly attacks her every time she leaves the pot however, he might just not want to share his 20 gallon. If that is the case I would say return her. But with the pot in there it might work if you give it some time.
I agree with Stanzzzz7, a 20 gal is just too small for an adult convict.
