Not saying you or anyone in this thread. But there is the tone of it not being one of the "cool fsh to have" (again, not necessarily in this particular thread).

But back to the op, I say if it's a nice colorful one and you like it, get it. Cool fish to have.

I see more festae than mayans (not counting mayans sold AS festae, I mean actually listed on vendors lists). Festae are a little over-hyped for my tastes (I mean, I get why people love them, just for me).

i agree, i think there badass but so many ppl have em or want em that i dont really want one anymore. i like lookin at em tho lol

It's worth every bit of $25 if it's healthy, a fish that you want and are willing to take care of.

If it's not, you shouldn't pay $5 for it.

Buying a big fish, no matter the cost, is a big committment. The cost of maintaining it - food, electricity, water conditioner, tanks, etc. - for YEARS will be much greater than the cost of the fish..

Bandwagons are only bandwagons if you hop on. I prefer to keep the fish that I enjoy rather than the fish that other people think are cool.

If you want it $25 is reasonable IMO. If you don't I agree with Matt I wouldn't pay two cents for it. If your question is would you be getting ripped of at 25 dollars my answer is no.

Ah, but if people - like you - stop keepingthem because "so many ppl have em" then they'll become "rare" again...and everyone will need to have them...and the cycle continues....

Matt

hahaha soo true. i like em, there beautiful fish. i just lost the desire to want one.

how do u tell festae and mayan apart again? a lfs by me has some 1". i remember it has to do w/ the dot by the tail..... sorry to derail OP, if its only 25 i thi k either way u get a beautiful fish, worst comes to worst grow it out and sell it on here

The spot on the tail of a Mayan is centered, while the spot on tail of a Festae is smaller and set above the center of the tail. Festae usually will have a visible (Y) bar formation just behind the head. The majority of Mayans will not have this unbroken formation. Once you see both species enough you will quickly be able to tell them apart. There are a few other difference that you will notice. I suggest searching for pics and older threads about both species (there are plenty here). This will give you a better idea of what to look for. You could also print out some pics to take with you if you still aren't sure.

Not sure why everyone dogs on the Mayan like it's something inferior to if it had been a true rt. Very cool fish any way you look at it IMHO.

They often get compared to Festae because both have the same common name...and as an aquarium pet, it is an inferior fish to the Festae as far as I'm concerned. They're still a cool fish in their own way though.
