Possible Silver Dollar Eggs

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i have 2 SD's ones fins are more curved, elogant in a way like an angel? what might this mean? different sexes?
also are SD's easy to breed? i have never thought about it but this intruiges me.

hello... i've got 3 silver dollar in a small tank with plants. 2 of them are females and one is male. i can see that the male have very very light colours especialy in the morning. i would like to ask if its better to seperate one male and a female in a tank instead of having them all of three in the same tank.

Females anal fin is straight, males have a "bump" at the bottom of the anal fin.

The males will colour up more than the females, red and black on their body. their tail will also become black on the edge.

here you go mate, a quick dodgy edit in paint and i can show you what i mean...

Top one is female and i've made the bottom one look male, kind of haha

Note- the bulge on the anal fin isn't red like in the picture, i did it like that to highlight the difference

Outstanding post, thanks! I just checked mine using your picture and was easily able to sex all 7 of mine, using the anal fin shape, even at about 3.5". Seems I have 2 males and 5 females. It makes sense too because while they do school, it seems that each male tries to be the dominant leader and herd more females into the direction he want them to go.

about 5" or so.

mine are about that and i have 2 female and 2 male. they keep trying to spawn, but i don't see any eggs. from what i have read it looks like they need soft water and temp to be in the 80s. i have the right conditions, but no luck :(

Hi & tx for your great post.

I checked my dollars for their gender and interestingly found out that the two of my dollars who show the dark spots and bands and chasing and shimmering together both are males! they both have the "bump" on their anal fins! Any chance they are *** :irked: any idea?

Easy to breed.. hard to get a hatch.. And even harder to get the eggs to lay anywhere for more than a few seconds in a community tank..;)

And is very fun and Intrigueing to watch!!

If they are their definately not silver dollar eggs, as someone said above SD's scatter eggs everywhere.
...

Not necassarily ;)

Anyone that can get them in a single species tank might have a pretty fun experience if you, get a couple large Broad leaves I believe around at least 3" x 4" and put them in the tank ;)
