Possible start of hith?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Glad to see Oliver improving Katherine, keep it up! Btw I'd like to clarify something: I notice that you never mentioned him having white, stringy poo, only the pits, is this right? If so then apparently a fish can have Hex/HITH but not necessarily have white stringy poo as a symptom?

I had assumed that white stringy poo would be a usual initial symptom, followed by pits in the head as it got worse but I guess this is not necessarily the case.

That’s my fault. He did have stringy poo. I hadn’t noticed it till I saw the bubble/pit forming. I failed to mention that in the post. I guess I was just focused on the pit and being in disbelief that I didn’t even mention his poo.
His poo went back to normal after the hexshield treatment.

Thank you for catching that. It is an important detail for anyone reading this in the future.

The problem with an illness such as HITH, is that for one it isn't an illness, or a disease. It's a symptom, a single symptom of an illness, that could be caused from numerous conditions. This is precisely why HITH has been so misunderstood over the years. See more on that in the following past discussion …..

No worries and thanks for further info. And as RD. mentions there's quite a bit of misunderstanding and confusion when it comes HITH -- which I'm trying to sort through myself now -- one of my Arowana has symptoms of HITH/HLLE (small pits on head similar to Oliver) -- but her poop has been consistently normal, so I'm just trying to get down to what the cause is by eliminating different factors.

I thought it was possibly due to too much stray voltage in my tank, but now am kinda doubting that conclusion. Anyway I don't want to derail your thread, Thx again for additional info and RD too, going to go read the link he mentioned now.

Look fwd to more positive updates about Oliver's condition.

Ooops, that wasn't the post I was attempting to link to above, it was the one with the vids from the DVM. Just some additional good info to add to the arsenal when dealing with a case of HITH.

My boy looking so much better!

I put his son in with him and they get along great. Never any aggression between them. So for now they will be tank mates. His son will likely get his own tank next year. I’m still trying to decide what I want to do with the females.
