I do highly suggest you get the API master fresh water test kit.
 
test strips are not very accurate, while great for our pools and hot tubs they are to far off to be good for fish keeping.

I've had an established aquarium for 6 years and have never used anything else but I've also never really had anyone recommend anything else either. I've had the Oscar for 4 years now.

in the mean time,. I would do large water changes, wither thats 50% twice a week, or a fin level once a week, fin level being 90%

50-70% water changes every few months couldn't possibly be keeping nitrates low enough in that tank. Weekly water changes are what you should be shooting for. Get a python or Aqueon water changer and it only takes 15 mins or so to do your water change. If your nitrates are really zero there's a chance you killed off all the beneficial bacteria during your 100% water change. Did you change out filter media when you did that big water change?
