Post home made caves

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I wish I could remember what the rocks were called that I was looking at. At one of my lfs they had a rock similar to it and they were charing $2.99 a lb. The rock they had that I liked was a total of $21. The rock similar at homedepot was only $4.99 and was about the same size.

"There are two very simple ways to test rock to be sure they are safe for your aquarium. The first method uses Muriatic Acid (MA). This can be found at either a swimming pool supply store or possibly a hydroponic supply store. To test any given rock, put a few drops of MA on the rock, wait a couple of seconds and watch for bubbles. If bubbles are seen, this rock is NOT safe. Distilled white vinegar can also be used in a pinch. The MA test is more accurate though.

Safe Rocks:
  • Crystalline Quartz
  • (Rock Crystal, Amethyst, Citrine, Rose Quartz, Smokey Quartz)
  • Granite
  • Jade
  • Lava Rock
  • Microcrystalline Quartz
    (Jasper, Agate, Chalcedony, Sard, Carnelian)
  • Onyx
  • Petrified Wood
  • Quartz
  • Slate
Unsafe Rocks:
  • Coal
(Commercially harvested coal is treated with an oil by-product to reduce dust)
  • Coral
  • Dolomite
  • Fools Gold
(or any other rock with metallic veins--Acid Producing)
  • Fossils
  • Limestone
  • Marble
  • Sandstone"

Landscaping/garden supply places will likely be even cheaper than HD.

all my caves are just flagstone leaning on the glass or other flagstone

I took a hammer to a couple of various size clay pots. I left some big and made some just 3 or 4 square inches. Then I pile them up to make caves.

then I just pile them up like people do flagstone. I like the look of terracotta, but you can buy pots of all types in your local big box type store.

(again, check PH!)

Here are some broken up clay tubes and a outdoor fireplace that the bottom fell out of so I took a hammer to it.
