I had an idea last night to take a bunch of PVC fittings of various sizes. T's, 90's, couplers, etc from 1/2 up to maybe 2". lay down a bed of sand, and pile up my fittings on top of the sand. Then I'm going to drizzle most of a can of PVC glue over the top of the pile of fittings (making sure to cover every piece completely with glue) and cover the whole thing with sand. Once it dries I think i'll have a cool looking 'sand rock' with tons of various sized openings/paths. If that doesn't give my baby labi's a place to hide I don't know what will.

I hope it sinks.. I might have to use some plant weights to hold it down.

I think i'm going to give it a try this weekend. Anyone have any thoughts?

Shouldn't have any dramas getting that to sink kallmond... but I don't know how good it would look. The sand will only stick where the glue is so I think it will just end up looking like what it is: A pile of pvc with sand stuck to it. Might be better off using great stuff or something similar to stick all the pvc pieces together and end up with a random shape that will look more natural, and then covering that in sand to get a more discrete finish.

Then again.. I am biased. I haven't yet seen any PVC structure in an aquarium (with the exception of logs someone was making by heating and warping PVC.. that was cool...) that I thought looked like anything close to "good"

I used an old dull kitchen knife to scratch the pot about 1/4 of the way through, and then hit it with the handle of the knife until i'd chipped out the entrance I wanted.

be advised though, you will destroy whatever knife you're using, so maybe some other tool would do a better job.

Warby, Greatstuff is a great idea for a more natural looking structure.

I've not done it personally, but everything I've read says to cut or drill clay/ceramic pots you need to soak them in water to get them thoroughly waterlogged and then keep them wet while cutting/drilling, otherwise you will just destroy them.

it may be necessary to soak, cut/drill a little bit until you see it starting to dry out, soak it some more, continue to cut/drill until it starts to dry, etc.... again though, I've not done it so I'm just being a parrot here. I tend to just smash the pot and see what I end up with *shrugs*

You could probably drill multiple holes with a masonary drill bit in like a circle and have a good chance of knocking out a good hole. I like the getting it wet sugestion above. Seems like it would be less likely to crack or shatter. I used the calculated smashing with a hammer technique also.

There is a lfs that has a lot of those in their tanks. I always figured they bought them like that. Maybe they drilled them. I'll have to ask next time I'm there. They do look really cool.

I'd really like to make a couple of caves. Their too expensive to buy and too small. Post some of the ones you made. Include what you made it out of.

I made mine out of 6" PVC and cut it half to make the arch shape. mine is 2 pieces in the shape of a "T" so my fish will have 3 ways to enter and leave the tunnel/cave.
I covered the PVC with silicone and poured the stones over it (same stones as the rest of my tank). There were a few sopts with no stones, so I added spots of silicone and a stone until all the tunnel was covered. Using small gravel or sand would be much easier and have a better end result.
