Why does it look like in almost half the pics there is a ghost shrimp on top or near a snail. Do they eat something off of them. I hope its not a stupid question. I never really kept either one before and never looked into them. I think I might start a snail tank out of that 20 gal. I have in the basement now.
yes...the shrimp will clean the snails shell...lol

those shrimp will graze on just about anything that they can find

Nice snails, Toehead and Rach!:D My canas are halfway the adult size and have laid five clutches so far.:D

I have a 5gal just for my snails since the big one ate my plants in my other tank :)
The big one is Mr.Nib Nib, because at the petstore he was with a tank of fish and they were nibbling at him trying to eat him.

Enjoy my first post!

:welcome: to MFK!

Have you identified him already? If so, what species is he? How old is he already?

Monster... snails. Now I've seen everything.

I wonder how many snails you could fit into a 450 gallon tank...

I had no idea you should feed them veggies. Good to know!

Actually, with Pomacea haustrum, Pomacea insularum, Pomacea canaliculata and a few others, you can feed them almost anything you can provide them.;) Dark green vegetables are best as these are rich in calcium. Try collards. You can also supplement them with calcium pills, cuttlefish bones and broken egg shells. Adding liquid calcium and maintaining the pH no lower than 7.0 also help. Soft acidic waters are not ideal for the shells. It is very important to maintain their shells as shell erosion can leave them very vulnerable to predatory attacks, health issues, etc. My canas have thick shells, thanks to Caltrate dose.:)

Here's a chart for calcium : phosphorous ratio.

I would caution us all to remember when feeding these foods that the phosphorous can have an ill effect on your water quality and may cause an algae bloom if the levels of phosphorous become too high.
