well put it like this if a P. Bichir Bichir is a grand or more most people want buy it and then the demand is not there .I love my fish but spend a grand no and I been in this hobby for 25 years.and I no people who shelled out 500 to 600 for a Hawian Dragon Moray but the price was 1200 but they did not sell well .

Hello,

the myth of Polypterus bichir bichir ...

WHY we cannot see a pic of this species?
When googling you can find several bichirs called "P.bichir bichir" ... P.congicus or even P.lapradei - a species that can look as a semi-adult/adult in another fashion every day ...
The descriptions of P.bichir bichir i've read are somewhat blurry in relation to P.lapradei - Frank schaefer wrote that it is difficult to see the difference between them ...

Anyway - i LOVE myths! And i would LOVE to see a pic of P.bichir bichir ... not a stress-coloured specimen, not a blurry "nessie type" pic ... a real pic of P.bichir bichir ...

... that isn't a Lap!

We have seen so much rare bichirs - hybrids, albinos, giant ansorgii ...
why no bichir bichir?

Greetings

Uwe

Uwe,

i agree the description for P. bichir bichir and P. bichir lapradei isn't very helpful. It doesn't really point out specific/distinct differences. It's hard tell what the differences are based on just the existing description.

As for Schaefer's Aqualog book, here's my opinion regarding P. bichir bichir. I certainly don't have the credentials like him, but I respectfully disagree with his ID on the LIVE specimens that he showed in the book. I strongly believe those live specimens are what's called 'Guinea lapradei' in the trade. As noted in the book, those specimens were collected in Guinea. As a result, some of his worded description are describing 'Guinea lapradei' and NOT P. bichir bichir.

Personally, the main physical differences I've found between lapradei (from Nigeria) and P. bichir bichir are the typical number of dorsal finlets, and the head shape. There are some pattern differences too, but they can be similar. The description doesn't mention the head shape, but if you see the drawing in the paper Gosse 1990, it clearly shows a difference. And the specimens that have been collected from East Africa (Lake Turkana, Omo River, Nile River), where the holotype was also collected, have shown this difference in head shape compared to lapradei.

Finally, the two also have very different growth rate, and very likely different max size, with the Pbb growing apparently much faster (at least for the ones originated from East Africa).

An importer here in TW had imported few PBB from JP six months ago. Two of my friends bought the juv PBB (4~6"). They are now 14" and 19". You don't get such awesome growth rate from a lapradei. Actually, the PBB has a very "PROUD" style of head shape, it looks like a bit "head up". There was once when LFS claim they got PBB, but those turn out to be lapradei. However, this time there are true PBB from JP.

i've seen many pics of wild and F1, but none of them are mine....sorry :(

i should add that most of these pics i've seen are of wild Pbb from East Africa or F1 born from East African Pbb.

The ones available now are somewhat different as they come from a different location. For one, they don't seem to have clear patterning, unlike those from Turkana/Omo.
