Post Rare US Natives Here

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Out fishing now on the Allegheny and caught this, I know it's not "rare" but I thought it was unusual to see the bluish-grey coloration in a common carp. Or at least I think it is, if you know it's something different let me know. It kind of looks like it may be a buffalo but I'm not sure.image.jpg

Its a buffalo, possible a small mouth or black buffalo

Beautiful buff! I'd sell sell my soul to have those fish in my native waters! Top 3 favorite NA natives, and one I desperately need to get my hands on!

Have any access to small juveniles? :naughty:

I was thinking the same thing, about getting one. That was actually my first bufallo and it was 21" 6 pounds so hopefully I can find some smaller sized ones that will fit in my minnow bucket :)

Buffalo juveniles are highly sensitive and often croaked in the aquariums. Another problem is that bigmouth buffalo is filter feeder means you simply can't give them prepared foods.

turns out that blue pike is a subspecies of walleyes and not a pigment mutation. There are few morphology differences. For instance blue pike has larger eyes and they do not get very big unlike their cousin the walleye. Their maximum size is only 15-16" when fully grown. The blue pike can be only found in Lake Erie ( or at least one of the Great Lakes).
Blue pike is genetically different from the walleyes.

You just answered something that has been bothering me for a year now. My wife is from Erie and we were out at a bass pro shop near there and in there big tank I saw something that looked sort of like a blue wall eye. Everyone thought I was mistaken. I took a pic end everyone told me it was a wall eye and it was color distortion but I knew what I saw. I think I even posted it on MFK I will try and find it.
