So, is there a reliable way to sex these guys? I have one, I'd say it's about 6" to 7" and starting to thicken up. It's it a 135 with a Rotkiel, 6 Geo. Winemilleri juvies, 4 Guianacara and some dithers/cleaners.
It used to be a bit more of a pain in the butt when I had 3 mature Red Head Tapajos in there... They'd try to spawn and the chocolate would always interrupt and start chasing them. I think it's because the Geos were larger than the chocolate. I got rid of the Tapajos, added the Guianacara and the chocolate mellowed out considerably.
When I upgrade to a larger tank I would like to find it a mate - but before I can do that I have to figure out what I have so I know what I need to get.
Any help would be appreciated.

Here are mine from a couple years ago. I had 4 and I loved how they changed colors depending on mood. They would change from reddish, to green, to almost purple.
They were similar to oscars in they have individual personalities, and are big eaters.
My water is more suited to central species.

I think some of the colors come out when they are the dominant species in the tank.I had a previous tank that had some stress,my male seemed to not color up.now I have this pair in a 90 gal. community
Nice pair ! I have mine a 90 gallon with a bunch more growouts I'm hoping once they are in my 150 gallon I'm setting up they will all be happier.
