Did you guys stoop and think for a minute.......maybe, just maybe, we cannot and will not put our hands/arms/any other part of our bodies in the tanks we have, for a very good reason?

:D :grinno: :nilly: Many ppl on here have a lot larger/meaner fish than me. I don't want to know what would happen if they were to stick their hand/arm way down at the bottom of their tank, trying to get water into a glass test tube in their hand,..........apparently you would like to see this, yes?   My JD and Kenyi are under 6" and I WILL NOT stick my hand into their tanks. And DEFINATELY not gonna stick my pretty lil' hand into the Dragon Goby's territory, both around 10"! I love them dearly! I have nets and buckets ready beside each tank in case of a Tornado, I can hopefully dunk bucket into their tank, grab them in the net and put them in their buckets, and take the buckets with me to my basement for shelter. But nope, ain't gonna be doin' what you've asked me to do. Sorry if I seem too much like a 'girly girl', but I'm a lady with 10 pretty fingers, that are going to stay that way if I have the choice. :D

Good thread. good read. personally i thought some of the commentary posts were funny, just ignore them, you're giving them fuel, just take it as a free bump so you can more views and results.

My jd is bigger not really afraid of him, as a matter of fact my texas who I think would bit me as he attacks the tank when I come by is bigger, but he hardly could do any real damage. I take a greater risk playing wiht my daughter, or my pitbull's.

If only there was some way a person could think out side the box to get water from other levels of the tank. Oh wait something is comeing to me its fuzzy its like a syringe with a tube attached to it, could be? could you use this to get water from other levels of the tank? if you don't stick your hand in and you vacuum then you are already familial with this concept.

I'm not going to nay-say because this is a great concept and I'm glad you brought it up. It is probably going to make a difference in many people's filtration techniques.

But I have to ask:

If there were ammonia in the center of the tank, wouldn't they avoid that area? Just like trout rising and falling with temperature changes. I mean, if part of my room smelled like butt, I would avoid it. So can we watch the areas in which our fish roam as a clue, as well as testing the points of stagnation?

You know what?! Imma take a turkey baster to the tank and get a sample from the least-circulated area and see what's lurking. Think it's only purposeful to test for ammonia? What about nitrite, etc?

I think its good to test for all, but ammonia is an indication of the others. I think its a good point about the fish avoiding that area I have a few fish that like to rest and just hang out on the bottom, they always hang out close to power heads so you might be on to something.

how large are your guys tanks? I typically test at the bottom, and I've never noticed much of a difference. I have a 40 breeder, with barely any water flow, because I keep axolotls, and I don't think I have this problem.

I have a 220, I wounder if overall water volume does play a key in this? I can test my daughters 10gallon when I get home she has only a small filter.

I am happy to see others testing at the bottom, I am glad your test are negative when testing at the bottom, as that means your doing the best you can for the fish. but one thing to double check is when you test from the bottom are you testing from an area that has the least flow, likely furthest from the return or behind decor.

started reading this so i had to go test all my tanks. i have no monster tanks but still wanted to know if i had dead spots. i tested bottom, middle and top. i had 0 reading every time :)

Awesome thanks for testing and sharing.

I actually just tested this out yesterday on my 75G/

Filters are Rena XP3 and Penguin 350 HOB.
Pretty heavily stocked as well.

My amonnia at top water was at 0, and i went down to the hole my pleco is always in and surprisingly got 0 as well. I guess i will have to try this on my other tank as well.
