Ouch. A buddy of mine's ferret killed his neighbors cat...I also had a customer who got the brilliant idea to feed their mean ferret to an 8 foot burmese python. Ferret killed the snake.

Holy crap!!!! That was a bad idea, feeding it to the snake. Guess they didn't know that they eat snakes.

I've always wondered where the term ferreting came from, way too obvious. One of m college buddies has a pet that's related to ferrets, de-scented skunk.

It originated in Europe, trained ferrets are sent down a rabbit hole to flush the rabbit out. Hence "ferreting" means to find/searching for something.

Descenting is horrible practice, it's illegal in europe. It is unnecesarry, painfull and risky.
Skunks and ferrets won't smell when neutered. Accept when they are scared, then they spray a stinking fluid to theyre atacker.

I prefer the smell of a ferret above the one of a dog.

I've always thought it would hurt. Hm, didn't know that. You learn something new here everyday, I love it!!!

The scent glands are unrelated to neutering....skunks can still spray, I do believe.

Edit: Oops, should have read your post more carefully, Frommel. Is it anymore dangerous/painful than neutering? I was under the impression it was a similar procedure...

ferets, like every member of the weaselfamily, have scent glands near the anus. They only use these when scared, to scare of atackers. Even dogs and cats have these glands. These glands are removed with descenting. The danger with descenting is, that they are almost on the anus, while removing the glands sometimes the anus get damaged, makking it unable for the animal to keep poo in his body.

The strong smell (musc) ferets and skunks give normally, is only produced during matting season by the malles. With neutering your ferret you wont have this smell.

It is always better to neuter your ferets. If the female's get in heat and don't mate, they stay in heat. This will cause problems with the white bloodcells and the female will eventually die. (It is a lot more complicated, but i can't explain it english) The male get very agresive during season to other ferets (and sometimes even to owners) and they smell awfull. I normally wait till my ferets reach maturity untill i neuter them.

Thanks for the info...

I think descenting of skunks only came illegal last year here in the UK.

In the netherlands and several other western/northern europe country's all cosmetic surgery's on animals are illegal. Don't know wich country's exactly. But that means no descented ferrets, declawed cats and dobermanns without a tail.
