Potential ban on all plecos..NOOOOOOO!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well, who wants to deal with red tape? Banning all plecos would certainly be the fastest way to sweep it all conveniently under a rug and not have to deal with those pesty extra board meetings about which species are invasive and which aren't.

I agree with stiffy, I don't think it would happen any time soon, the zebra pleco ban was for a good reason, (and to be honest may be needed for others that don't have it!). It's easy for me and stiffy to say it though, it won't affect us. However, it would be harsh, but to illiminate invasive species is a must. I know a few species have managed to get a hold of certain river and lake systems in certain areas, even though it wouldn't be the same for ever species, nor the same in every area of the states. Danger is they sweep every pleco and every place into the same pan.

If I had to guess, I'd say this isn't going to happen all too soon either and yes, invasive fish are not good! We can thank the nincompoops that released their snakeheads into North American waters for not being able to get them legally now.
Modern informed fishkeeper>:nutkick:<Stupid snakehead releasing hippy.

well i know they started destroying some asian waters (think it was asian) so it wouldnt be the worst thing. A lot of people wouldn't be happy though.

As statedby stiffmeister, I doubt this will be erected anytime soon, though I do actually condone it. While my loricariidae love affair has been fun, where I to choose between the potential extinction of various plecos or their total ban from the aquarium hobby, I would choose the latter.

For the record, the "common" pterygoplichthyinids and hypostominids are in fact the most potentially invasive species, so I don't really understand their widespread allowance as opposed to other, smaller and less prolific species.

I agree on that...

i swear they only make such laws so some ppl can keep their JOBS

Blame your friendly fellow fishkeeper that didn't realise his "common" got so big and so "freed it" so it could have a better life destroying and outcompeting native species...

I don't think i have ever caught a Pleco through the ice here in MN. Why would you ban a fish that can't survive?
