Since this old thread has been reinvigorated, I thought I'd show changes in terrestrials now being used.
Because it grows wild here, I have easy access to, been using Dieffenbachia lately, and it has proved to be just as effective as Pothos.
My 180 has been testing in the 5ppm range for nitrate with its use, and the other additional truly aquatic plants, in the tank as well.

the root system gets quite impressive.
Even when my pump blew, and it took a month to get another one (due to the Covid crisis) without any water movement, nitrate remain low.

And like before, Papyrus seems to work well as a plant in the sump.

I don't want to give the impression that terrestrials are the only heavy nitrate consumers, beside the terrestrials, the tank is heavily planted with vallisneria, Hydrilla, and a few other aquatic species.
