So I decided to try some Pothos in my overflows to see what effect it would have on my Nitrates.

Tank is an 8' 300 gallon stocked with:

12" Female Jag
12" Male Argentea
8" Male Jack Dempsey
7" Female Freddy
6" Female Festae
12" Common Pleco
6" L75 Para Pleco
4" L75 Para Pleco (x2)
4" L147 Pleco
4" L204 Pleco
6" Rainbow Shark
4" Silver Dollars (x6)

not a super heavy stock space wise, but with the Loricariid army, a decent bioload for sure.

Weekly water change is about 50-60% depending on how my team is doing while watching football ( sometimes I lose track)

1 large hanging basket split between the 2

overflows and all I did for the most part was rinse the dirt out of the roots and place them in there. Runners have already gone up the wall, into the main display and have grown straight upwards by about 6". Pothos has been in for about 3 weeks..........

pics......Just tested my Mbuna tank with the same kit and I tested right at about 50-60 ppm at my weekly change so I know it's working ( just recently added some Pothos to this tank as well....waiting to see results)

That's a very beautiful tank, I did the pothos thing too, unfortunately it takes a lot of it to make a difference pretty much the whole top of your tank would have to be covered with it to make a real difference, the plus side with that is it looks really cool covered in plants especially a tank like yours, good luck.

I have some pothos too. but it doesn't seem to be growing. Not worried with the nitrates I just like the look of it growing across the top of a tank. Yours looks nice.

I grow Pothos in my tanks too. I really like the way they look. Your tank is beautiful and the Pothos are a really nice addition. Good job.

Thanks guys! Yeah I was kinda skeptical at first, but it really seems to make a bit of a difference. Keeping them under 10ppm per week is pretty cool. I'll post some pics a little later to show the growth comparison from start till today. Roots have really taken off inside the tank and Ive had to cut it back a bit because it's gotten crazy.

I put 2 vines in my 125 rbp tank and it took a few weeks for the roots to really start to spread but they were clippings, not whole plants. A month later I was really busy at work but these plants were growing a new leaf every couple weeks so out of curiosity I tested the water and only showed 25 ppm w/ 6 7-9 in rpb and a ton of MTS. I have 8 vines in there now that are starting to take off plus 4 more in my 55 with my 6 mollies Silver Aero, and Granulated Cat. It looks nice and even though it does not completely remove the need for WC, it at least helps. I also hardly have any alge growing in the tank which used to get so bad I would not be able to see inside the front since it is in front of a window.

^^ Agreed. i still do water changes weekly and wouldn't think of not due to the chemical soup our fish routinely live in, but it's nice to see the the nitrates can support the plants and they actually are starting to flourish. We have quite a few plants around the house and they do look nice on top of the tanks......
