Sort of. Pretty hard to see with the tank running because the roots are actually inside the overflow boxes, but here's an overhead view of them when I was setting up the tank. Far left is the return, center is the emergency drain and right is the primary. Both boxes are the same just reversed for the other box....

roots sit in the open areas between the pipes

You don't have to use any added flow, here's an easy way I used: http://monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=504763

Three questions before I proceed to reinvent the proverbial wheel:

1) can pothos work under water, but just not as efficiently, or just die?
2) is there any formula to determine how much nitrate one plant absorbs per day?
3) does consumption reach a plateau or does it follow that when a plant grows by x grams it absorbs x grams of nitrate, whether young or mature?

Pothos will EVENTUALLY die if kept fully underwater.

They will die underwater for sure but they will sprout runners very close to the surface with roots in the water.

Not sure about a formula as each plant is different sized. I've also noticed that leaf size dramatically increases being in the water as opposed to soil. Leaves are close to double the size of my terrestrial plants. Same kind of plant kept in the same room

I have two now that I am growing. It is actually a collection of different individual plants tucked inside the pot. Growing well and in the trickle filter. Will add more soon but for that jungle effect and not connected to the water anyhow...
