From what i caught natively in michigain its between a very big small mouth bass or the muskie

Jack Crevalle are beasts and they take forever to wear out, I catch them alot while fishing for other species and I cringe when I hook one now so I guess that they are the hardest fighting fish that I have ever caught.

Saltwater for their size I have to go Tog(Blackfish or Tautog depending where you live)
Freshwater hands down Carp

+1 on the carp. Also rainbow trout are pretty good fighters.
For saltwater, im saying tarpon

Freshwater carp or trout.
Saltwater, 100% european sea bass. Those beasts fight like nothing.

sturgeon for freshwater never been to saltwater. nothing beats a sturgeon!

Trout are honestly the worst fighting fish I've ever caught.. Carp are hands down the best freshwater fight. Followed by wiper.

i forgot to include Pacus for fresh... they too are darn stubborn and strong

I fish exclusively with light tackle. That said, in northeast - striped bass; in southeast, redfish (red drum).

However, wildest fight in terms of jumping and big time runs, either roosterfish (Costa Rica) or Blacktip Shark (off Kiawah Island).
