Power outage question.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
you can get a ac/dc air pump next time... it runs on electricity if there is , if not , it will switch to batteries...

as for outage, what i did is stir the water....anything that can cause water movement will allow oxygen transfer

When I’ve been without power I just use a bucket or cup(depending on if im doing this to my pond or a tank) and scoop up water and dump it back in a few times. I do this every half hour or so. I’ve never been without power for more then 6hrs though.

I've done this a few times and fish survived.

Water changes and surface agitation will help oxygenate the water.

The big problem, if you have canister filters, is that a long period without power causes the beneficial bacteria in the filters to die. Then you have cycling needs done again, along with ammonia spikes and all that stuff.

^ at that point filters need to be emptied and rinsed out. You don’t want all that ickiness going into your tank and causing problems with your fish.

^^ this guy is spot on, will definitely dump total s**t in ur tank. I always run sponge filters in my tanks then when I lose power I just hook them up to a couple battery air pumps I keep for this pupose. they already charged with BB cause they always being used constantly and they agitate the surface for oxygen replacement when power is down. up here in the winters I lose my power sometimes for 3 days to a week in the winters. cover the tanks with my bed comforters to retain heat. I hate winter!!!!

Thanks for all the help yall, I'm planning to get some battery powered air pumps today so I'll at least have that going for me.

You are lucky it is warm there.....the biggest challange up here is heat. i have lost power for over a week at time with temps in the 20-40s. Last time I heated my office to 75-76 with a propane heater and ventilated the room every so often. I ran my filter generator....only 50 watts and air pump of course....7 watts. My generator used most of its juice running baseboard electic heaters for the rest fo the house plus our lighting. We have no water without power....worst part of all.

^ Same here. I only seem to lose power in the winter.
Last winter it was -20F out when we lost power. I covered all tanks with blankets and just prayed the power would come back on soon. And it did. A few hours later. My pond ended up nearly frozen over because of it.

This time I’m prepared for winter. We finally decided to get a generator so I can run heaters and bubblers if need be.
