i always have my neighbor call me, even if the power only goes out for a minute, just in case a pump fails to kick back on.
i also have a web-cam that i can pull up from any computer. i can pan/tilt/zoom and see all my tanks.
submerged media is also very helpful, instead of a wet/dry
