yeah, you are. and your temp never changes.

in winter, when the temp outside is in the 30's or 40's (and this is in texas, imagine up north) the interior temp will drop to below 70 in a few hours, after that, the tank will drop below 70 several hours after. so 12 hours after the power is out, you could have a sub-70 degree tank. beyond that, the lack of water movement and aeration will eventually lead to dead fish (in less than a week more than likely, depending on your stocking)

We're looking into passive solar heating of the hatchery. There are units with exterior heat collectors that route to interior radiant heat pipes inside a collector with a thermostatically activating blower. My largest expense is heating the 8000 sq/ft hatchery. Hopefully, this unit will cut the bill dramatically. Also looking into wind generators and photovoltaics to reduce our need of pulling from the grid.

yeah, it was a mess here too.

Well, for one, it's in the high 50's here right now after being in the mid 80's earlier today.. the temps in the DMV area drop pretty drastically after storms. a few days without power would probably do it... i don't own any rays but i would assume they're pretty fragile.

Ive heard that with most large photoelectric setups the government pays for 30% of it with a grant write off and another 30% can be written off tho taxes it differs per state but on a casual 12grand setup you would only pay around 4grand for it. This incentive works for homes and business up to 100k setups i heard. Grants and tax write offs may have changed but look into it your going off the grid. When you get off the grid you make your own rules.

My power could go out for 3 weeks and nothing would die. The softcorals would lose color other then that nothing would change. And the Monster freshwater fish i have would be pissed bc i would stop feeding them

so whats the deal>? you really think when the power goes out for a few hours your fish will die get a grip on reality i mean serouisly what kind of unstable tank are you building that would kill its inhabitants if your power blows for a few days

I keep 17 rays from the Potamotrygonidae genus; the ammount of ammonia that they can produce is baffling. Due to an evolutionary adaptation to fresh water they create an immense amount of urea for their size. :)

Watch your Nitrites over the next week.

For now, I have large air pumps that switch to battery with power interruptions. they are always running sponge filters. They cost me around $60 and are well worth it. A generator is great idea, but making it fully auto costs thousands! I have my eye on a generator but concerned that the one time that I do lose power for a significant amount of time, I will not be home to turn the generator on.

i was very worried about this too, so i installed a web cam with pan/tilt/zoom so i can view all my tanks over the internet when im not home.

a generator will on run if you are home to start it..if you buy a large set-up with an automatic transfer switch which will start the generator whenever theres a power loss.i think you should get the uninterupable power supplys for computers..it will at least run some airpumps until you are able to get home and manually start a generator and resume your normal pumps..

Does anyone have any recommendations on a UPS unit, as well as a generator? We will be running 2 FX5's, 6 300W titanium heaters, 3 air pumps and one large pump to run the x2 623 gallon ponds.
