Gday all, whats the best technique to get some size on an umbee real fast? Ive got one thats bout 3'' and im hoping to put in in my main tank in a few months which has four 9'' peacock bass, 14'' Green aro, 5'' Dovii and a few others.Hes gonna need the size or its gonna be food! Anyone got any powerfeeding tips?

use hikari bio gold and sinking carnivore pellets, feed as much as the fish will eat at one time, i drop 1 pellet at a time to my trimac when he stops coming up i quite feeding,i do this 5-6 times a day. here are some pics to prove this works these are in 1.5 months time.
here is they day i picked him up.

Feed it a small amount lots of times, and do massive waterchanges.

Clean water is the important thing.

Also, opinions vary, but IMO many fish posted on this site are overfed. That second picture above is an example of an overfed fish.....again IMO. The first picture shows the shape a trimac would have naturally. You can force feed your fish to the point that excess growth results in an unnatural shape.

Keep in mind that fish do not have a well developed "appetite inhibitor." They generally try to eat 24/7 in the wild since food is so scarce. They cannot constantly find food, but they need to continuously look if they are to survive. In an aquarium, they will eat to the point of being unhealthy.

If I were going to try to grow a fish in a healthy manner at a reasonably high rate, I'd feed several small meals a day and change water several times a week.

Thats a very impressive result in 1.5 months! Il slow down the feeding in my main tank and do several feeds a day in my growout tank with sinking hikari gold pellets and regular water changes and hopefully in 3 months he'll be sweet to go in! Thanx everyone!!

Try some market shrimp cut up into bite sized pieces. If your umbee likes it, give it to him once a day or so in addition to the pellets. Being as small as he is now, get fresh shrimp and cut it up then freeze it. He'll likely eat less than one shrimp per day.

The only thing that packs on size in my CA's better than shrimp is live feeders. There are a lot of logical arguments for and against live feeders. But if done right, it works and it's worked for me.

Big tank, with frequent water changes is the best way to go. Umbies eat a lot so you are not going to have a problem with feeding.

When I had mine, I fed them 3 times a day (nothing out of the ordinary). They were kept in a 180 with weekly water changes. They grew about an inch a month.

dont know for umbees, but for flowerhorns do 10% w/c every day, feed your pellet mix 3-4 times a day, and two cubes of bloodworms a day. so it may work as well for umbees
