predator for my tank.

haha my Yellow perch dont stop moving all day, and they have lots of personality. In my opinion its all luck, you could get a fish that does nothing all day or a fish that loves to move around, its all up to the fish (except like grass pickeral they usually stay still) i've seen catfish in videos swimming around in daylight which you wouldnt expect but it happens. and whats the point in keeping non natives they really arent that interesting and you never see their natural habitats. i'd say try a couple sunfish and some yellow perch you can go wrong. they dont get too big either so you wont have to worry about rehousing right away.

@Kaosu, how would a sculpin and a catfish get along?? they do seem very interesting but i've never seen one with my own eyes

i vote 1 Yellow Perch 1 Bluegill and 1 Green sunfish!!

well i find them along side bullheads all the time... the fish in my avatar is my sculpin...and i have a thread devoted to her.

though they tend to be pray when smaller for most other fish.

SCULPIN!!

lol amusing predators that most people don't keep..they get about 8 inches and are bottom dwellers.

Well the OP wants an active predator in his tank. Sculpins are not known for their activity. I have owned few sculpins in the past and they are just laying around the tank wait for the food passing. Same with Yellow Perch, they MAY NOT be active and just laying around like walleyes. Bullheads can be hit or miss since they can be active or just being lazy all day.

Stay away from pickerels, they are less active than the crappies!!!! Ditto for these rock bass.

I have never had a native fish that was as active as any tropicals...and there is probably an easy biological explanation for that. They want to conserve energy in cooler waters.

Many large cichlids are the same as centrarchids...they just sit in one place, and then will glide from one side to another occasionally. Sometimes fight a little, and might have a strong feeding response.

My pickerel are a lot more active than my crappie are. The only things more active than my pickerel are my longears and my carp. If you want extremely active go with minnows, dace and darters. What ever you do stay away from tropicals. They are boring and very unattractive! nothing beats a NATIVE even if it does stay still all day.

...they can be lazy yeah but mine is very active...comes to the side of the tank and begs when im near it..follows me around and such ..uses her perches and logs all over the tank.

Although i have the tank set up just for her and feed a range of live food (i breed my own) to stimulate her to move...crays shrimp guppies cons... so i guess i make mine move around allot...and she loves pellets and begs for them all the time.

>.> love sculpin.

but i guess for most people they would just be lumps waiting for food.

haha i wish we had them up where i lived i'd try a few. nothing worse than having a part native tank ><!!! goldfish and bluegils swimming together haha

IMO that's terrible idea. Rainbow trout do get big and need chiller.
hence, "bigger tank" as for the chiller, that's the general consensus but has anyone kept one w/out chiller?

chances are im probubly going to go with some sort of sunfish. it seems like the better option. definatly not boring based on my past experience. and they'll stay small enought for my 75. those guys along with my bullhead should be plenty fun.

Until the bullhead eventually eats them...which I will promise with about 75% certainty. You will be surprised what the big ones can fit in their mouth.

Should work out fine...sunfish are at least colorful.
