Predator Tank Questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'd definitely suggest oscars. That's a good size tank for oscars, they're not crazy expensive either. I have 2 and they're fun fish. Definitely predatory too(my largest ate one of my new convicts and new albino pleco). Sounds like a fun project for kids. I wish I'd had a teacher who wanted us to build up a fishtank!

Listen. Im not trying to be rude or anything. I am very open to the suggestions you guys have said, but your not understanding the project. We do not have anything. No tank. No filter. No nothing. We have been researching for about two weeks or so. We have a chart to fill out. I have stated before everything that is on this chart. After we plan out what tank, filter, fish, food, everything like, we take it to the education board to be approved. In March, if it gets approved, the room will be done and once everything we have order has came in, we can start the tank cycling and everything. I came on here to find the best fish that go together in a predator tank and decor. I now have decor, but still need what fish go together. Again Im not trying to be rude.

For us to decide what fish we really need to know everything about the tank and filtration. Different fish require different filtration. Sump, canister, HOB etc. it's hard for us to tell what goes together without the idea of what fish to base it on. If that makes sense. I'm not trying to be rude. Even decorations matter when choosing fish.

Filtration-sump if the teacher is taking care of it all. If not, a canister with hang on backs or just two canisters. FX5 is what I use on my 150.
Heater-2 Aqueon ProHeaters 250W
Get a heater controller you can plug them into, I use the Finnex with digital display.
Lighting will depend if you want plants, with large cichlids you probably won't want live plants so then lighting would be up to you. Marineland Doublebright LED are cheap and look nice.

You'll need filter media which you can look up different types. Just get mechanical and biological media.
Food will depend on the fish.

Pretty much everything you listed for stocking gets too big for a 125. I'd agree with a pair of oscars, or a jaguar cichlid, dovii, jack Dempsey. But if you're trying to squeeze multiple aggressive fish in this tank there will be a high risk for them being injured or killed. I think it'd be better to choose one big fish and then figure out things that can go with it.

I'm not trying to be rude but if you all have been researching for two weeks and have come up with a list of fish that all get way too large for a 125 it doesn't seem like there has been a ton of thorough research done.

Well the tank is 125. The filter we have chosen is a fluval FX6 Canister Filter. The lights we choose are Current USA freshwater LED lights (36-48).Then we have the pool sand. As of decor we have a piece of drift wood, java fern, and rocks. Those are basically all the categories he gave us to fill in.

Ok that is a good start.

Now do you want one or 2 big monsters? Do you want a group of 8-10" fish or would you like to try to fill top/mid/bottom of the tank for a more complete enviornment?

Would it be possible to give me some examples of all those options.? I'm not with my group so I don't know what there wanting and I think seeing what they could have would help them decide.

Fx6 is an AWESOME choice for a filter, those are wonderful filters. They're fairly easy with maintenance as well. Another idea would be to do a native fish tank, and get mid, top, and bottom dwellers. There are many large and small options that would I'm sure be easy for a school to get a hold of(Idk what state you're in though). It would be interesting to have state native fish, help future and current students learn about the natural history of your state. The school board might be more agreeable to using native fish as well. Just a thought...

Also, if you dink around on the TOTM thread, you can get lots of fun ideas. You just need to be conscious of tank size vs fish size. I just went through this decision process myself(though I had more space)... It's tough. Especially since you have multiple opinions. Imho I think a more complete environment compared to just 2 monsters would be more fun :) Like I said, that's just mho.

you beat me to this. I have been reading through this post, and I kept thinking why not a native tank??

atown---> a native tank would be great, esp for a school project. depending on where u are located you/your class could collect most of your stock. seeing them in their natural habitat would help you on setting up your tank. any way I would do a small group of sunfish (I prefer orange spotted), maybe a couple crappie, and bullhead or 2. if you like this stock maybe another member can tell you just how many of which species to use. I don't know where u are located so I used Indiana natives... going with the native theme you could use locally grown/collected plants and invertabrates. I think it would be rewarding for you and your class to do
