A native tank is a great idea. Just keep it simple, sunnies, crappies, rock bass maybe a bullhead nothing that gets too big. This will give you the best chance for success. You could also use local drift wood rocks and aquatic plants.

Fx6 is a great filter, but if you only have 900 bucks (seems like a lot, right?), I wouldn't blow it on an fx5. A used 125 will run you at least 200 bucks, maybe you guys can recruit wood shop to make you a stand. New they're much more. I'd get an Odyssea CFS canister, think of it as a budget fx5! http://www.aquatraders.com/category-s/30.htm
If you like the idea of a native tank I can help you out. For peoe who are new to natives if recommend doing a sunfish community. Let's say 8-10 Lepomis sp. Sunnies plus a smaller bullhead species (yellow would work well) or a Stonecat (Noturus flavus) on the bottom. I wouldn't recommend darters unless you plan on keeping the water absolutely pristine (Nitrates < 20ppm), keep the tank cool, and have a lot of flow.
Try to catch sunfish that are 4" or less to put in and grow them up from that size because if you bring them into captivity larger than that then they'll probably not acclimate to well.
Our budget isnt $900. That is just how much we have as a grand total right now. Like I said we really don't have one. He's letting us basically get what we want as long as everything goes good together. And I'm pretty sure we are buying everything through some people he knows.
