Predatory cichlid for a 3 foot tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There isn't many choices for predatory cichlids like an Oscar. Maybe a dwarf pike sp. Some people keep salvinis in a small tank like that, but I wouldn't.

Not carnivore, but tough as nails, Neetroplus.

I was going to say a pair of pike cichlids, quick to catch food fun to watch dig, and will breed in that size tank, but there are allot of good choices out there. You could even think of some African pred. Comprecicepps are really cool and different looking, and some are just the right size for you.

First thing that came to my mind is a warmouth. No, it's not a cichlid. However, is gets a more robust body shape than the cichlids that would stay smaller. Also, they have a big appetite and a big mouth to match. On top of that, where they are native, you wouldn't need a heater and if you enjoy fishing you could very easily get one for free. I use to have one that would eat shrimp, pellets, feeder minnows, or anything else I dropped into the tank. He was very enjoyable. Sorry if it isn't what you're looking for. i just thought I'd make the suggestion.

Dimentions? some 3 Ft tanks can house larger fish and some can house smaller ones. i have a 36x18x24, It can house a fish a lot bigger than if you were stocking a 36x12x15.

Dwarf pikes would be ur best option but I don't know anyone selling them right now. Expand ur options past cichlids and u have more to work with. You could do exodens, red wolf. If your tank is a 40 gallon breeder then u could do a female grammodes as they stay in the 6-7 inch range and are extremely aggressive
