with as small as those gars are (which isn't tiny, but also not huge), i wouldn't worry about converting so soon. just get them eating regularly on minnows and then they will be used to associating you with food. once they are eating regularly you can try to mix it up with frozen silversides or cut frozen fish...they will eventually catch on. from there go to FD krill and pellets. making the jump straight to pellets with gars works in some cases but does not more often - unless you are using particular techniques and have a lot of patience (Richard is very good at this; i have no patience).
so in short, feed minnows, then go to frozen, then the other stuff. the gars will be fine and you won't be as frustrated--
