The "monster fish" is a toadfish, there are several brackish ones but I think that one is the river toadfish, Thalassophryne amazonica, and it is a sedentary ambush predator, it gets to around 6" and has recently been tank bred, it is a true freshwater fish, because of their habits they a pair can be kept in a 20g tank, they prefer a sand or fine gravel bottom as they like to partially bury themselves. They also prefer live foods but can be fed by using a food stick to wave meaty foods just above their heads. There are several reported hospitaliztions due to stings but no reported deaths, the venom is apparently very painful but not life threatening.

It's funny someone told me they are venomous, because I was handling them with my bare hands the other day.. They are actually very smoothed skin, and I didn't see or feel any spiney areas anywhere.

I also agree with that Scientific name, Amazonica sp. However, I have seen this same fish, or very similiar fish, under a variety of scientific names, including Potamobatrachun tripinosus. Obviously there is alot of confusion among the 'Monster Fish, Stone Fish, FW Lionfish, etc, etc, etc' ..

BTW, if anyone is interested, ours are eating krill from the forceps. :woot:

If it matters at all the Bolt cat is eating from my hand. Not graciously, but I hasn't drawn blood neither.

Im really looking for a couple elephant nose knife fish? Can you get me some, or do you know anyone that can? I see them available pretty often on the east coast but the dealers wont ship to California@!@# I would be forever greatful if you could fullfill my wish! Thanks, Chad :WHOA:

They are on our list, and I order them everytime.. but they seem to be seasonal, because they are seldom available. I will work on it for you, keep in touch ;)
