Problem.... Electricity Bill.......

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
bill dropped almost half. Then Avista raised the *&^%$#@! rates again...
Yo Yo economics
Yo get da bill
Yo pays da bill
Yo cuts da usage
Yo gets a rate hike.
Agree with all the, it ain`t the tank mate, replies.
I just started going over the amount of toys I have on stand by power..you know, the TV that uses almost as much power off as on. Same for computers, dvd players, cable/satelite boxes. Trouble with some of this stuff is if you remove power, you have to go thru a whole set up routine or wait for the boxes to reboot.
Just when I thought I could get out...
They drag me back in:irked:

Hey, guys. 86ºF is a good temp for certain species like Discus, Angels and others from waters of that temp. Higher temps are also a bandaid on the immune system for seriously inbred fish like flowerhorns. Of course, in a pristine environment, 78-82 ought to suffice for any tropical specimen.

No even close on the 10x. Maybe the brand new ones just out. Certainly not the old ones. The old ones I've had burn out on me have litterally smoldered and filled the place up with smoke. As soon as the LED bulbs hit a reasonable price point, all that mercury laden, lousy Power Factor, non dimmable, CFL spiral crap is out the door...

I believe the CFL bulbs last 10X longer and they use less energy. I've been replacing any burnt out bulbs with CFL ones. I can't change out a good bulb! :) I think if your going to change a bad burnt out bulb anyway, might as well put in the CFL type.

Don't raise temps to offset immune disorders. High temps might controll Ich and Worms but high temps turn a latent columnaris infection into a full blown fish killer as well as promoting swim bladder and other infectious bacterial based diseases.

I have over 20 tanks and its only about an additional 70-100 bucks when everything is running heaters, lights, pump, filters

How??!? I'm running 4-6ft tanks, and 3 smaller tanks and am paying about $140 over. I just cut back from 12 tanks because it was closer to $225 more per month than last year when there were no tanks.

I am have the same prob... My electric is way to high!!!
Dishwasher, GFIs, TVs, cable, tons of lights and 2 chandeliers, ADT system, washer and dryer, fridge (all appliances are Energy eff theres more but to much to list), then the stuff for my 300gl... 2 lights, FX5, 3 powerheads in sump, timers (cant think of anything else)... and just my electric is about 175 (thats about 100bux more ) a month. Before I remodeled my house it was an ave of 78 a month with all the old appliances/elec stuff.

I dont get it why it raised so much since I got all new stuff??
This is a very interesting topic:)

I can't believe how high some folks are paying for utilities. I had high bills for the hatchery. But, after dropping some $ on improvements, my utility bill for the house and the hatchery are now $200/month. That's for all the junk in the house and all the lights, filters, blowers, heating, and cooling for 125 tanks.
It took some work. I double insulated the attics, replaced all windows with double pane insulated low-E windows, injected expanding foam insulation between every wall stud, replaced all doors with insulated doors, and went to full flourescents. I don't use individual heaters. I heat the building instead. Now, even in the dead of winter, the furnace only kicks on a couple of times a day. And, only for about 15 minutes each time it does cut on.
Once we switch to passive heating, we're expecting to cut the bill by half again. And, after going to photovoltaics and the wind generator, we're expecting to drop the bill to only 10% of the original usage (as required by law). A friend of mine redid his CA home the same way. His electric bill for the year in 2008 was $43. That's after all the credits he received for selling excess power back to the grid.
