i have 3 jags in a 55 and a bgk in a 30 gal .. but both are grow outs so its ok to keep small fish in a small tank ..

If I am reading this right, its ok, because you did it?

I don't think I would put a BGK in a 30 for anything more than about 2-3 weeks. They simply need more space. Keeping one in a 30 for any significant amount of time is asking for the fish to stunt.

it is ok when the fish are small .. and thats all they need .. the jags are doing great growing nicely .. and will need a new home before to long at all ..

and when is it that you see a BGK grow from 2" to 6" plus in 2-3 weeks? how about 2-3 months ..

all the fish are eating blood worms and active and growing well .. and when they get bigger they will get a new home..

im just saying just because you get monster fish you dont have to home them in a 500 gal tank from the start .. if i tossed my jags in with my larger fish .. they would be food .. same as the bgk .. you need to grow them out and the best way to do that is in smaller tanks .... unless you have a room full of cycled empty 300 gal tanks

Just an update, they are doing great in the 20 gallon long and have been fighting much less and the green sunfish's fins have healed nicely.

Green sunfish, are gonna beat up most anything you put them with all the time. as they get larger especially the male when it becomes nesting time and he builds his nest, at least half of the tank will be his and the rest of the fish will be run to the other end if not outright killed

the original problem was the green sunfish getting its ass kicked, this greeny is not as agressive as the bluegill.

Unless the green is a lot smaller than the Gil, and even then sometimes this has never been the case for me, but stranger things have happened, i suppose. I just post based on what happens in my tanks.

Ditto for me... My Bluegill was one of the most pushy, aggressive, gluttonous fish that I ever had the pleasure of keeping. :grinno: That said, he also had more personality than ought to be allowed by law. My Greenies definately got their fair share of being pushed around by the Bluegill, but when I planted the tank even more heavily, everybody seemed more at ease. I think most Sunfish varieties enjoy LOTS of PLANTS!
