problems cycling with feeders

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Start over, and this time, don't bother with goldfish. Just use ammonia. Most people use regular household ammonia. I used granulated ammonium chloride. You can get a pound of it for like 5 bucks, and that's enough to cycle a small lake.

Well the problem is that I'm driving to california in a week to pick up my fish durring fall break, so starting over isn't an option for me. Would frequent water changes help?

If a fishless cycle can get my tank ready by the 18th im all for it, what do you guys think I should do?

Clean everything throghly...
Reset up your tank,
after everything has been cleaned up,
fill with dechlorinated water...

Set the temp, for the temp you want your fish to be in...

Acclimate your new fish from California.

Add "STABILITY" 1 capful for every 10 gallons on day one.
24 hours later add 1 capfull for every 20 gallons.
Every day at the same time add 1 capfull for every 20 gallons for 7 days.

Follow the instructions on the label EXACTLY,
do not ad lib/improvise/divert anything...
Your fish will be fine...
test and test again, do your weekly w/c's, you'll see your fish grow and thrive...;)

I'm telling you this from personal experience, not something I read or heard...

Stability works pretty well if you are in a rush.

you definately should start all over.... i wouldnt' have cycled with goldfish to begin with. good luck.

I agree with what has been said.

And its important to know that the ick was with out a doubt brought on from the stress of the ammonia that is in the tank.

If it were me i would add
1- a heater and slowly bring the temp up to around 80-83

2- add some meds for the ick. Like rid ick or other popular brand ick treatment. That will not harm bio bacteria. As well as salt in the amount prev. said.

3- a bottle of SAFE START by aqua safe to cycle the tank in a very short time (2-3 days). Only add this after you have brought the tanks temp up. Or it will not work very good.

The temp deal is assuming you will have tropical fish in the tank. If this will be a native cold water tank then the safe start will take a few more days to work the cycle out completely.

Dump it in the day after you have a ammonia source. Etheir ammonia or live fish. And you are all set. Add it one time and forget about the cycling process for ever.

You don't need to completely restart, but it's probably not a bad idea. Once the white spots have been gone for 2 weeks or so, you're fine to add fish (assuming the tank is cycled)

Zenzzoooo thanks alot for the advice! I saw that stuff at petsmart but didn't think anything of it. I got some API nitrite/nitrate test strips today so I'm gonna check out the params pretty soon. Does anyone use that bio spira stuff anymore? Havent seen anything about it in a few years. I have cycled tanks successfully with gold fish many times and this is the first time ive run into any problems.

So should I vaccum all the gravel and remove ALL the water? and rinse out the filters with dechlorinated water? How do you advise going about with this process?
