Profitable fish to breed?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Species of geophagus, red crystal shrimp, or most species of pleco that are un-common would do well for selling fry i think.

I know they are not fish but some freshwater shrimps go for a lot. Retail just for RCS is 5 bucks per where im from and crystals go for even more. Imagine blue rilis or king kongs!

Stingrays, I can not emphasize that enough. Once you get a good breeding pair, you'll be able making a huge income. However, a big disadvantage is it takes quite a bit of capital and a good amount of enterprise in order to start a breeding project.

Stingrays do fetch a high profit per stingray, but with the extremely large tanks you would need, and I mean thousands of gallons, and the low birth numbers compared to most fish, I feel that it would break even in comparison to some other fish. You could breed millions of fish in the same space and costs as maybe a hundred or so stingrays. With all that being said though. If I had the money I would totally invest in breeding stingrays, just because of how cool it would be.

if you find some wholesalers and undercut competition something like festae or rtm would make a good profit if they spawn regularly enough, its when they go cold that it would get frustrating... im currently trying to get a pair of hemichromis elongatus or of the six i have, also have two red jewels that im 75% sure are a pair... red jewels always sell...

Plecos usually sell well, just watch seems to be selling at stores and web sites. Only thing is they hide and you won't see them much. Cichlids are best as they seem to have interesting behaviors. But what is selling today, may soon be not so hot next week. Best is to enjoy the fish and breed the ones you like

Yeah thats what I was thinking too. It takes a lot of capital in order to start production, especially for it to be profitable. But once you get it going, it would work, but like everything the more you put in the more you'll get out.

The cool factor is all the reason. I can't decide if I want a pair of parents stingrays or a nicer pair of pups to grow out.

I've never gone out of my way to breed fish, but I've accidentally spawned corycats before! I read up and they seem like they'd probably be easy to breed? (I hadn't planned for them, the other tank inhabitants ate the eggs.)

My new blue tiger shrimp seem to be breeding without much assistance as well. A couple of them have eggs, but none have hatched, yet! They seem to sell for a decent amount for the amount of effort involved.
