Project Pea Puffer

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've researched the hell out of these things. If you believe everything that's there then this fish, even though only tiny, would be better suited to a much larger tank than you'd think. That's because of the numbers you'd need for an harmonious set up.

Apparently they shoal in huge numbers in the wild for protection, so any aggression is diluted within the group and they get along. Start reducing the numbers and that's when problems can arise. They start to pick on each other, or tankmates. Thus resulting in an unhappy stressful environment.

Hence the fact that they can be nasty little buggers. That hex tank I was planning on putting a solo fish/small group in is about as inadequate as you could get for this species.

So....I'm still going to set the tank up as a nice little project but pea puffers are being crossed off my list.

Sorry to hear that. It sucks when you've been looking forward to a novel and exciting fish or concept in your tanks that ends up unviable for whatever reason, I am all too familiar with that feeling.

Would love to hear what you end up doing though. Is it going to be something like a cherry prawn/nano-fish tank?

It would be a hell of a project, but the indostomus sticklebacks would be a pretty close alternative to seahorses but are freshwater. They just need lots of small live foods.

Maybe scape the tank appropriately and get a nice pair of apistos and a few small colourful tetras.
I cant see why your wife would be uptight about a nice looking tank with some interesting colourful fish that may breed and the apistos would be a good challenge from what ive heard.
Would be a nice change from your giant gourami and his crrew.

I still have my little quarantine tank set up which has my Borneo red finned silver sharks and red tailed barbs in. I won't be setting up the hex tank until those fish are out of quarantine and in my 360.

The hex tank is pretty much going to go in the same place where that quarantine tank is. So I have a little time to think and research about my next move regarding the hex.

I may have to try some reverse subliminal psychology on the wife. Tentatively choose a fish I fancy and plant some nice juicy seeds in her mind regarding said fish. Hopefully she'll take the bait and decide said fish is a fantastic idea, and that it was her choice, lol.

esoxlucius, would you still be interested in suggestions for the tank? I have one I think you may like: striped kuhli loaches.
At 60 cm in length your tank fits Emma Turner's min. threshold for them, and they're a lot of fun with their playful behavior+clown loach-like stripes.

Forgive me, maybe I wasn't clear. The 60cm dimension is the height! The footprint is only 40x40, in a hex shape, if that makes sense.

I'm definitely going to set it up as something, i've already bought a small LED light fitting that clamps to the top, and i'm building a small stand too.

The big question is what the hell I'm going to do with it. I might even go completely bonkers and get a group of neon tetras or something yet, lol.

Lol. Hex tanks are a big conundrum haha.
