I believe this is a prolapse problem. I started this thread yesterday because I thought I saw a white spot on a fish. Whatever it was, it showed up in pics but disappeared.

I treated with salt and today I saw a Praecox Female developed a prolapse.

I searched some threads and it seems the recommended treatment is 1tbsp Epson salt per ten gallons and hope fish reabsorbs it.

How do I switch treatments? I figure I'll water change now to dilute the salt.

I worry that other fish are biting at it. The second pic shows a rummynose eyeing the prolapse.

I have a 4 month old fry solo in another ten gallon. Should I move this female there with the fry? Should I move the fry to tank Whit rummynose and Praecox? Fry is about half the size of smallest rummynose.

Any advice is appreciated.

Update:
I decided I had to move her to the tank with one fry . I kept seeing rummynose trying to pick at the prolapsed part. Research indicated that it might retract with epson salts but I know she'll definitely die if rummynose keep biting at it.

Question now is can I treat the fry with Epson salt or should I move the fry to the tank where I just took the female Praecox out? I was hoping to snap a pic for size comparisons but praecox fish is hiding behind the sponge filter.

Thanks for any input.

I’d move the fry to another tank. Not sure how’d they respond to the Epsom salt. But I’d try 1 tbsp per 5g.

Thanks. So the only tank fry can go into is the tank with the other Praecox and rummynose. He won't get eaten but might get outcompeted. I guess I move him over and then I can move him back to the lone tank if there's an issue.

I'm leaving Monday night to Fri morning do this is bad timing, which is why I tried regular salt treatment in the other tank so quickly.

So crazy thing is just as I water changed the rummynose tank and was ready to move the fry, there was a positive development down with the fish in question.

I have to wait a little bit to see what happens, bit it appears fish is pooping and whatever was sticking out might have retracted. There a slice of poo on bottom that much have been from fish as well as it's too big to have come from the fry.

It appears fish was constipated. I fell asleep for a few hours until I replied above.

I guess immediate plan is to see how fish looks in an hour or so.

I want yo do Epson salt treatment but I'm worried about giving feeding directions to my mom with new setup of fry with other fish.

If I can just keep this female with the fry (which is my plan unless it still looks bad after this bowel movement, at least I can have her feed frozen cubes to rummynose/Praecox tank and feed fry food food to fry tank. (She has done this several btimes already so she's comfortable with that."

Well, Epson salt treatment has begun. The bowel movement finished but there still.appeared to.be a prolapse. I moved fry to rummynose tank and turned down the flow of the HOB.

I guess I'll have my mom feed the fry food several times a day to that tank.and give one cube of frozen food.

Not sure what to do about Epson salt treatment fish. I guess Ill tell her to drop 2-3 grains of food in there.

I just hope fry can eat enough. Its smaller than the smallest rummynose tetra in the tank.

Just wanted to update. I returned this morning. This female Praecox is still alive. I wanted to make sure she was eating: she is as I put some frozen brine shrimp in and she goggled it up.

I can't tell if the prolapse is completely reversed. I'm not sure it's a 100% normal but it looks better than when I left on Monday so maybe she has a chance.

A few hours after the brine shrimp, I saw her having a big bowel movement so I guess everything is working.

Also, she looks healthier than when I left on Monday. She looked really skinny Monday, so maybe she hadn't been eating from constipation and feels better now.

My instructions were not to feed Tuesday. Wednesday, was a pinch of fry food, and Thursday was a few grains of NLS grow.

Edit:
Looking back at he pics in this thread, I think she's definitely improved from her initial condition as she definitely does not looks as bad as she did in the pics. I'll post a pic when I log in with the phone. I took two pics but can't attach on the computer.

Here are the pics I just took. Hard to see if it's back to normal but as I said, I think there's improvement from Sunday.

I did a 50% water change and added 1 tbsp rpson salt to maintain the dose.

It's been like ten days since this first happened. It looked like it got better Friday last week but for the past few days it looks the same as it did originally.

How long should I continue with the Epson salts? It seems like it's making her poop a lot as I see a lot of feces on the tank bottom.

At some point, I guess I will just have to accept that it won't get better but I'd like opinions on how long before I give up on the 1 tablespoon per 5g Epson salt treatment. I've been redoing after water changes.

Thsnjs.

I’d go with out and see if it gets worse. Maybe just soak the food in a epsom salt solution Atleast every other day. See how it goes.
