"Prong collar" on dogs... any opinions?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So I'm not gonna bury it, lol
My mom said to look it up on the internet, like that justifies using it, so I linked her to this thread... just FYI to you guys :)

I hate those things. I think a gentle leader of easy walk harness is a much more humane options.

Also I have worked with dogs for years and I'm working on my certification to become a dog trainer. In both jobs we only used positive reinforcement. With my own dogs, one of which is a bad puller, I use a gentle harness and it works very well without any training.

Don't use it !! Get a new trainer ... My trainer showed me how to use a check cord and my 6&7 yr old kids can walk my dog with no problems.. No need for that kind of collar.

Oh, he's not a puller when walking. He's VERY good at walking on the leash. The prong collar is used for when he jumps up on the kitchen gate and when he barks :screwy:

Oh by the way, I emailed the thread to my mom and her reply was "okay now get back to homework"

I feel bad for this poor dog :(

No no no!

A prong collar won't help with those things. What do you do when he's not on a leash?
Geeze. It's way better to use redirection for those. Make your dog not want to jump up or bark by offering something better. One thing I do for jumping is when I get home I ignore them until they are sitting and being calm. I taught them this but it's very effective.
Dogs jump up to try and lick your face like they would a more dominant dog. It's very natural for them. Yes dogs correct other dogs with their mouth but usually adult dogs use a muzzle bite not a neck bite. Get a good dog trainer that uses positive reinforcement. You will then have a dog that wants to work for you not one that's afraid of you.
How much italian greyhound is in him? They have very thin skin and a prong collar would tear it.

if its for when he barks get a bark shock collar. My mother in law has a small yappy turd of a dog that would bark constantly. One of those shock collars shut her up quick. a few days and no more yappy dog. now even with the collar off, she will just do a little ruff not some big barking fit that will last 30 min or more
