Thought this might be fun and educational for everyone.

Post a fish name (be it genus, species, family, common name etc.) and then "sound it out" by spelling it in a more phonetic manner. Use caps to show emphasis on 'hard' or accented syllables.

Example:

Characin

KARE-ah-sin

Also, If there is a fish name that you want to know how to pronounce. Post it here and I do believe you'll get an answer.

Keep it civil! Remember that sometimes fish names are pronounced and/or spelled differently depending on what part of the world you're in.

good thread! its embarrassing but I used to pronounce cichlid, kick-lid... granted, this was about a year before I got into the hobby..

It's a good thread topic. Hasnt been touched on enough. Just thought I'd add.

i have allways wondered about this one

Acestrorhynchus falcirostris-------------- i allways thought it was

Ace-stror-hine-chus fal-ciro-stris

But that is only a guess.

Well, I don't know that one for sure either but props for tackling so many syllables!

I speak English, not Latin...

I got into fish cause I like fish, not to learn a foreign language...

Yet I understand the pangs that common names lead to...

So I just sound out the first 3~5 letters of each Latin word...

Such as Reeko Octo... for Rocio octofasciata (Jack Dempsey)

Or Amph Citron... for Amphilophus Citrinellus (Midas Cichlid)

It's usually enough to help me look up the right way to spell it and usually gets my point across enough to communicate :P
