Proper feeding and care of a Black Pacu

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The bigger they get, the bigger their crashes. Ours get spooked by something they imagine up as it happens when we are not in the room. If I happen to be in the room, it makes me jump--the boom crash is that loud. The first time it happened while my kitten was perched high in her cat tree, it frightened her so badly she jumped off and landed on the floor about 10 feet away. Both cats usually run out of the living room when it happens now.

Something may be up with Bubba. While doing a water change today and getting a longer look at him, I have noticed black specks on his skin, few in number and greater towards the rear half of his body and along the lower/upper sides. They might be just dark colored scales, but this and the color change have me wondering. No other fish in the tank for years, so nothing to get in that way. Speculating about bacteria or fungus while I look around and get some advice.

Based on symptoms, black spot or myxobacteriosis is possible. Is there a good way to confirm one of these diseases?

Get an upclose picture of the spots and post the picture in the freshwater disease section, you'll get a higher response rate. What do the spots look like? are they raised off the skin? black spot disease is caused by a parasite I do believe, and they leave noticeable black lesions on the fish, similar to ich but black instead. myxobacteriosis tends to show itself as black, white or red spots/lesions from what I remember reading about it forever ago. I could wrong but a picture is worth a thousand words in this case. I would get a wide spectrum bacterial med such as quick cure or even methylene blue to treat the tank with. Also I'd get some Seachem paraguard to cover any parasitic issues. P.S. What part of OH are you in? If you ever decide the fish needs rehomed shoot me a message, I can accommodate him well. Not saying you aren't doing a great job so far but it sounds as if your hands are tied on an upgrade tank for him. Awesome job thus far though!

I've really enjoyed reading this thread. The tank looks great. It's a 100x better than it was. That's one lucky fish to have someone there so dedicated to it. I hope you can get these new issues under control. I'll definitely be checking back to see how Bubba is holding up. Keep up the good work.

x2. You're putting in work. Sad it's been stunted but it's almost expected with these magnificent gentle giants repeatedly ending up in the wrong hands.

As another update, a very close look shows the spots as missing scales over patches of melanistic skin. He has acquired a few sores near his mouth from ramming into things, I am curious what he has managed to ram, as without the driftwood there is a good deal of open space for him.

tank walls would be my first suspect since its getting tight in there for him. glad the missing scales aren't anything else, I would add salt as a precaution anyhow.
