Proper way to pronounce bichir?

it irritates me that people say "polyp-terrace"

It irritates me that people bump threads from like four years ago.

I always refer to them as Polypterus rather than Bichirs.

I say Poe lip turr iss.

I stumbled upon it after googling it. A few mos late is better than some years late. So i admit my partial-blameworthiness.

I own a Ornate Bichir, about 8 inches. I pronounce it 'bi - sheer'. Although i have heard it pronounced a few different ways myself. Also not sure where people get the "r" from when the pronounce it 'birch-er'. quite puzzling.

Just found this thread, when I got my ornate they wrote it as birchir on the tank, and as I'd never seen one before that's what I called it and its stuck. So now I have a bichir called birchir!
