Protein skimmer for ray tanks

A traditional protein skimmer will not work on a freshwater tank to remove impurities. All you can expect is to aerate the water. There is a foam fractionator that will work on freshwater. It's called a Tornado II by AquaForte.
They run about $400 and that doesn't include the high-volume air pump or water pump.

Why do you think you need a protein skimmer? What do you want to accomplish with it?

Except for having to replace trace elements regularly if spreading out your water changes due to using a foam fractionator, these units will literally polish your water by removing all organic wastes, tannins, free-floating algae, heavy metals, and more.
Most of these units are too large to be used indoors. I'm working on constructing a unit that's 3ft tall with full functionality.
This is a basic drawing someone else posted and I've been using as a model. Sorry I removed my tags, matrix ID, and venturi setup. Like I said, I'm still working on it. If it works, turnkey units (with pumps) can be constructed for less than $200.

Humm. Interesting and for some people with bad water it could be a good device to run.

I'm keeping the materials to myself until I get it right. I don't want anyone else to have to go through the trial-and-error expenses. If and when I come up with a satisfactory working model I'll post all the specs in the DIY forum.

The problem is that people who keep rays keep them indoors and to get a unit that will be good to go on a ray tank will be massive
A few pond guys I know run a skimmer and the size of them is massive
A few company's started making them but stopped making them after a year due to bad feedback
You could just copy this design looks fairly easy out of big gage PVC pipe

i made something like this years ago. i never actually used it on a tank. it was just a length of clear plastic pipe, clear pvc cut and drilled for ends, some overflow piping, wingnuts and a couple of rubber seals and job done. just add a pump 
I looked at it and thought about it and dont think I can reproduce that to get the same effect without knowing more.
