A similar story holds true for P. punctifer...earlier records refer to it as P. fasciatum. I think the book "The Catfish Connection" by Ronaldo Barthem probably has the most detailed info on its size...the largest publish record I could find was 38 inches.
I know very little about P. magdaleniatum, but from the pictures I've seen of them at markets in Colombia, they reach at least 30 inches.
And, if we are to follow the current taxonomy, then the world angling record for "P. fasciatum" of 47 inches and 70+ lbs should actually be a P. reticulatum, since it came from the Parana basin in Argentina.
P. corruscans certainly seems to be in a class by itself as far as max. size goes..
Regarding the taxonomy, I tend to trust the genetic data suggesting fasciatum = punctifer = reticulatum = oriocoense, but unfortunately it's much easier to create new names than it is to dismantle them, so short of some serious morphological work, the names are likely to stand for quite some time.
