Pseudoplatystoma orinocense?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
blackbullhead blackbullhead Thank you for that. If I could give you 100x likes, I would. What would you say about punctifer, reticulatum, corruscans, and magdaleniatum?

What do you think in general about the genus? I thought it has been in limbo since the last two contradicting revisions by splitters and lumpers, kind of the same as with the giraffe catfish Auchenoglanis... No?

A similar story holds true for P. punctifer...earlier records refer to it as P. fasciatum. I think the book "The Catfish Connection" by Ronaldo Barthem probably has the most detailed info on its size...the largest publish record I could find was 38 inches.

I know very little about P. magdaleniatum, but from the pictures I've seen of them at markets in Colombia, they reach at least 30 inches.

And, if we are to follow the current taxonomy, then the world angling record for "P. fasciatum" of 47 inches and 70+ lbs should actually be a P. reticulatum, since it came from the Parana basin in Argentina.

P. corruscans certainly seems to be in a class by itself as far as max. size goes..

Regarding the taxonomy, I tend to trust the genetic data suggesting fasciatum = punctifer = reticulatum = oriocoense, but unfortunately it's much easier to create new names than it is to dismantle them, so short of some serious morphological work, the names are likely to stand for quite some time.

Thank you so much for this authoritative teachings. You bring much pleasure and satisfaction to my heart.

wednesday13 wednesday13 What do you think Mr. TSN of what BBH has said, a man of few words and posts but boy are they always weighty...?

OK, guys, you have caused my downfall (I promised the wife I won't buy anymore fish until we open for business).

I've ordered 5. They are USD 40, much more than the usual low quality TSN available all over the US for around $10-$15, but still less than the usual "allegedly w/c" TSN sometimes seen for $60-$100.

I like my fish in sizeable groups, which greatly enhances the potential learnings and justifies better the humongous investment of time and money in addition to the initial purchase cost investment.

Once I have them here and they are off to a good start, you may or may not choose to follow up on your suggestions and pick one fish or more, as you wish. I wanna at least pay for one, so I am not entirely a sponge and remain vested so to speak.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Thank you Brian and Tobias! $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Hahahaha, hey, sorry we got you to break a promise to your wife but hey, at least you aren’t paying for all of them. Speaking of which I’ll pm you for your paypal.

So are they w/c or the same runty farmies? I always have my doubts. You might remember my thread on the same topic where I was conversing with Steve of Exotic Fish Shop about his $125 TSN for sale. He said he trusts his South American supplier 100%. I said I don't. That was the end of it. https://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/threads/125-tsn-from-exotic-fish-shop.720259/

About the same has transpired now with Mike of the Aqua-Import:

TBTB: Hi Mike, these are truly wild caught, right? Because if they are the usual farmed low quality TSN available for $10-$15 (if at 3") everywhere in the US and the world, me and a group of people on MFK will be upset. ...

Mike: That is correct, these are wild caught fish out of the Orinoco River. I've attached a picture of actual stock for your reference. They are currently taking Cobalt Predator Pellets.

TBTB: I hope your exporter is not betraying you. It is mighty tempting to get live TSN juvies culled from SA farms at a dime a dozen and sell them to you as w/c for a huge profit and far less work. Neither you nor I would know the difference, perhaps until after several years pass by. Statistically, 99.99+% of all TSN offered in the US and worldwide in our trade are one of the two - culls (refuse, underperformers) from food fish farms in South America or the poorly and cheaply raised in SE Asia for the ornamental fish trade.

Mike: no reaction.

TBTB: I assume what I tell them (Steve, Mike) they find insulting but really they can't prove their TSN source beyond their supplier's words and their supplier words don't prove or even mean anything to us.

I honestly can not say in good conscience that I know that they are wild caught or believe 100% that they are.
I will ask them myself to see if they will respond.

Viktor, do you think Yellowcat Yellowcat could help in anyway? From what I’ve read he is an expert in the subject of catfish.
