Found a few of these guys at Petsmart. They looked pretty healthy. Around 2" and the black was very dark but the blue was pretty washed out.
I've kept C.A. Cichlids but never Africans. Would the blue come in more as they grew? Would you go with one of these from Petsmart?

on petsmart its 50/50 and i just bought some at my local petsmart and as soon as i got them in my tank they went dark black and the blue was brilliant but they are kinda aggressive but yes i think the blue should come in well depending on the food and surrounding enviroment they are in

Thanks. I'll probably get them then. I was thinking of changing my substrate, currently white Petco sand. I was thinking either mixing PFS and Black Diamond blasting media or round tan/brown pebbles. Which would you suggest? Also I have driftwood in right now for my Jack Dempseys. I should take that out and decorate with rocks, correct?

blue should come in as they get more comfortable. they def need/like rocks. usually best to get them in a decent size colony 12+ imo, to reduce aggression and later reduce ranks if/when necessary to get more ideal m:f ratio. i've had them with black sand and tan sand. colors seem to pop better with lighter substrate. almost seemed camouflaged when i had them with black sand and dark background. interesting little fish w/lots of personality when comfortable

Demasoni are very aggressive. If you are going to keep them, you need a large group (12-20) to spread out the aggression and prevent them from killing each other.

Thank you. I'll do straight PFS then.

I'll be keeping them in a standard 55g, most likely as a species tank preferably of all males. Would that be large enough for that many fish?

EDIT: If that's not gonna work for them just let me know and I'll do Pecock Cichlids instead. I just want some smaller (5"-6") African cichlids that have nice colors.

a colony of demasoni should work fine in a 55g. i've done the "common" blue-yellow mix and kept demasoni with yellow labs in a 55g in the past. good luck

I keep about 18 or so in a 135 with labs, rusties, zebras, etc.

Larger colonies work much better than small groups. They mostly direct aggression towards themselves or any species with similar coloring. They are highly aggressive but stay smaller as they are a dwarf species.... They are serious rock huggers too.
