Puffer killed Oscar?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I didn't know they were poisonous until recently, but still knew they puffed up as a defense mechanism...

kinda silly to put a 10" O in that kind of jeopardy.

In any event if the O ate the puffer, the puffer would puff up in the O's mouth or down his throat. If not poisionus the internal stretch would be stressful enough to kill the oscar.

Turd's the Wurd!!

That's a tragedy man but I have to admit, I have no idea what you were thinking feeding your Oscar a puffer...

So their skin is poisonous, as I said.

I have also heard many times that they were only poisonus because of the foods they eat in the wild, but green and green spotted puffers tend to be (if not always) wild caught as their reproduction in captivity is a huge flop... and it probably takes quite a while for the toxins to entirely evacuate the body.
Although its the enternal organs that secrete the poison, its not impossible that they have some secreted to the surface of their skins (which is a more efficient defense mechanism cause the predator can taste there is something "wrong" with this fish and spit it back alive).

Sorry for the Oscar though..... :( Man that sucks! Poor guy ... it was a stupid mistake though :(

Bacteria and algae produce the toxin and are eaten by shellfish/snails and may even grow on their shells. Then puffers eat these, and their digestive system absorbs the toxin and transports it to certain organs.
