Pulchra Compatibility

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The bleheri might be a pair. They may just be settling in and since the fire and ice was a diffrent species it was targeted first . Also worth mentioning any stress like improper setup or acclimation in a new home also can delay the fighting .

It's only once they are settled in and they start to mature that they show their true colors . Unfortunately only time will tell if your bleheri are a pair however in my experience the best odds of pairing is done from a group , the competition between them seems important for the bonding to occur.

As for the pulchra , same scenario. Sorry I cannot sex them from that video . They could be a pair , they could also just be siblings who have been raised together, eaten their way through their siblings but haven't matured enough to turn on eachother or are under some sort of stress that's delaying them from acting normal and fighting it out (like being stuck in a tiny little bare tank )

As mentioned above It's never a sure thing with channa they could look to be getting along then one day the dominate fish decides it's no longer sharing it's space and everyone else dies. Even bonded pairs can turn on eachother. Although typicall if they pair and are kept properly they will remain peaceful but it's not always the case.

Hope that helps, it's not all good news but that just part of dealing with channa!

Just noticed your signature In The first post.

Your in Malaysia? If that's the case you may want to reconsider sub-tropicals all together. Unless you can provide them with a prolonged winter period of lower temperatures your going to run into health problems. They cannot tolerate tropical temps year round.

Bro DC,

Thank you, your for your inputs you shared here. Quite a revelation newbies like me.

As I mentioned earlier, I've had the bleheri & fire and ice for slightly more than a month. Perhaps they've settled in & starting to show their true colors like you mentioned as the attack happened a week ago.

As for the pairing part, I'm not too concerned about the pairing spawning (maybe in the future). For now I'm more concerned about the pair starting to attack each other. Hope the 3ft with driftwoods & plants is enough space & hiding spots of the pair of Pulchras and reduce the chances of them attacking each other.

Yes I'm in Malaysia and yes the weather here is stupid hot. With water temperatures around 28-30 degrees C. I'm including a 1/6hp chiller for my new setup, dropping the temperature to 18-20 degrees C shouldn't be problem.

Sub-tropicals really caught my fancy. Tropicals, save for Pleuros are kinda drab looking. For my tastes that is.

I like this statement of yours, just need to prepare myself for the unpredictability of channa keeping.

Thanks again.

A chiller will do the trick ! I'm lucky here in Canada it's not difficult to provide the winter cycles !

DC,

In your case I think you need to worry about the keeping the temperatures up in the Great White North lol

Even in Belgium temperatures can be tricky, and we're known for our terrible weather (thankfully, 360 days of rain doesn't affect fishes inside xD).

I may be the only lucky chap to have gotten a bonded pair out of two Aurantis. That being said, they only started sharing mutual space after I've tried to add another 2 Aurantis to see if I could form a pair. Indeed I did, and Indeed I found four halves of Channas across my tank...

Lesson learned, worth it for me, not so much for the dead Aurantis. :(

Channas are to be removed from their 180 today to move to the 100, as I need the 180 heated up to trop temps for my Odoes coming in tomorrow! Thankfully, when they see the net come into the tank, they scout it, and sit in it like it's a new hiding place they need to approve, so it'll be swift and easy. :D

I hope you do have a bleheri pair, while I find them much less aggressive than the other channas I've had, I still love how beautiful they are, and they are not any less channas than any other! :)
