Pumkinseeds spawned, now what?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
No, I'm the only one that I know of. They are sometimes for sale as pond fish.
Wish I had a big pond to keep them in so I could get more gar or perhaps a bowfin :)

Great fish themselves, i've had Gars but not the Bowfins and i have catched them in the lakes around here (both). In fact my oldest caught a Bowfin before i did, should have seen his face when he pulled it from the water,he didn't know what to make of it until i told him. How did you come across the Pumps and can you sell them.

I would love to go bowfin fishing. But I have to settle with northern pike and other non so exciting fish. Anyhoo...
I bought them at a shop when they had a sale. No idea where they got them. They were available a very short time from a wholesaler and I managed to get 4 from that place.
The females were from the sale and males from the other place. Haven't seen any for sale in over a year now.
Sure I could sell them, no problem. I have one guy who's interested so far.

They are pretty fish i'm sure you could make a bundle,is there more natives around your area such as Bass or perch or anyother type of sunnies and cats? Could you sell them to your LFS or trade like i have.

A short video with the two females and a smaller male. The males are way more colorful and aggressive. I have 2 mature females and 3 males. Each male has his own spawn pit that he guards. Also have some smaller ones that I don't now what they are yet.

I probably could make some money. Here a 2-3" pumpkinseeds sells for about $20. Ridiculously expensive.

As for other natives, yes and no. We have perch, zander, tons of different cyprinids (carp, rudd, tench, roach, silver bream etc.), salmon, trout and pike. Those are the most common. The only cat we have is wels, and it's considered an endangered species.
There were some tests done in the sixties with smb put in a few lakes by Abu (the rod and reel maker) and I suppose they are still around somewhere but i never heard anyone fishing for them. No other "wild" bass or sunfish in Sweden that I know of, but I know there are a few populations of pumpkinseeds and black bullhead in Norway.

I haven't seen any of those fish in years since i left Scotland back in 89', i had Tench with my Koi's in the pond, i sure would like to get a couple of those guys now just to have a few natives from Europe, i might look around to see if there is anyone over here sells them. Nice lookers you have there, do you plan on getting others?

Random fish fact: sunfish or fish in the family Centrarchidae such as sunfish and lmb are native only to North America. Might find some that were introduced though.

Yes, Centrarchidae are native no North America. But they do exist in other parts of the world where they have become a real nuisance (Germany and other European countries).

I do plan to get some more. I want some longears but they are extremely rare over here. I guess pumpkinseeds will have to to for the time being.
